2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: Flying Olympic flame soars above Paris as Celine Dion wows crowds

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris has officially opened, with the Opening Ceremony featuring a spectacular appearance by athletes from 206 Olympic teams and the city of Paris. Lady Gaga and Celine Dion headlined the musical performances. French sporting icons such as Zinedine Zidane, Amelie Mauresmo and Tony Parker, as well as international Olympic legends including Serena Williams, Carl Lewis, Nadia Comaneci and Rafael Nadal, took part in the final leg of the Olympic Torch Relay. Finally, a fire was lit in the flying cauldron hovering above the City of Light..

    At the top of the Eiffel Tower (where else?), Celine Dion performs again after years of battling stiff-person syndrome, and her voice sounds as good as ever.

    The flame now soars in spectacular style above Paris after being passed on several times between French Olympic legends, the two most honourable mentions being Marie-Josée Perec and Teddy Riner.

    “Olympic organizers said in an informational handout to the media that the cauldron was a tribute to the “first flight of a hydrogen-filled gas balloon,” which took place in Paris in 1783. In December of that year, the two inventors of the hot air balloon, physicist Jacques Charles and engineer Nicolas-Louis Robert, took off from the Tuileries Garden, making it the first manned aircraft.”

    Led by three-time Olympic gold medalist handball player Michael Guigout, the group is jogging through Paris with the torch. Normally the flame is passed from hand to hand, but the whole group keeps the torch aloft as they make their way through the City of Light.

    After Nadal and company carried the torch aboard a boat, the French connection was re-established, with tennis great Amelie Mauresmo carrying the flame to the Louvre, where she handed it over to NBA legend Tony Parker.

    Nadal carried the torch out of the Eiffel Tower and onto a boat, where he was joined by Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci, and traveled in the opposite direction from the earlier parade.

  • Another uniform that unfortunately didn’t make it onto the broadcast was that of Guatemala. This one incorporates a lot of national details, with players wearing blue shirts and blue shorts, or green dresses with small blue vests. Their hats are also blue, with the Guatemalan pattern on the underside of the brim. The safari-style outfit is a constant theme in some countries’ Olympic outfits, but this one goes a step further.

  • With the national parades over, here are some eye-catching uniforms that didn’t get their moment to shine on the NBC broadcast.

    The Czech Republic uniform is one of the most admired. With bold colors and patterns, breathable fabrics and designs, and a jacket that goes with almost anything, Czech players are well-dressed and comfortable.

  • The French team and its 571 players wore uniforms that included sleeveless blazers for women, and while the French are known for their fashion, the long sleeveless blazers may not be popular in the United States.

  • The final three countries in the parade are Australia, Team USA and France, with France being the final host nation, and will be honored as future host nations with the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia in 2032.

  • The USA team uniforms are once again designed by Ralph Lauren, and these three women’s soccer stars show us the right way to wear them.

  • France will be the last delegation to enter the parade
