The front line of Smith, Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman worked perfectly, as the three of them thrived against a powerhouse European team, with Rodman providing a fantastic assist for Smith’s first Olympic goal, Swanson scoring a goal and then assisting substitute (and former substitute) Lynn Williams on the fourth and final goal to nearly seal the win.
The win gave the U.S. Women’s National Team three more points and officially qualified for the knockout stage regardless of the result of Wednesday’s match against Australia, but the second big win gave the U.S. more confidence going into the rest of the tournament in its quest for the gold medal.
U.S. women’s team wins gold and silver in multiple events
The U.S. swimming team continued its battle for dominance in the pool as Tori Fuske won the 100-meter butterfly on Sunday, earning Team USA’s first individual gold medal. Fuske beat U.S. teammate Gretchen Walsh by 0.04 seconds to win her first Olympic gold medal.
