Taylor Swift posted a message on social media on Tuesday, expressing her condolences following the death of a third girl in the brutal incident. Police said Monday that a 17-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and murder and that a knife was seized after the attack. CBS News affiliate BBC News reported that the suspect was born in Cardiff, Wales, and moved to the Southport area in 2013.
“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport continues to wash over me and I am in complete shock,” Swift wrote on social media. “The loss of lives and innocent people and the terrible trauma for all who were there, families and emergency responders. These were young children attending dance class. I simply don’t know how to convey my sympathies to the families.”
By Tuesday morning, a group of Taylor Swift fans had reportedly raised nearly $36,000, double their fundraising goal, to help the victims of the attack and their families. BBC News.
The fundraising page says the group is working with the local Alder Hey children’s charity to “raise funds for the funerals of the two young Swifties who tragically died.” Many of the children involved in the attack are being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, according to BBC News.
“It’s heartbreaking to think of what their parents are going through right now and the financial stress this is causing them,” Christina Jones, from the Taylor Swift UK & EU Facebook group, told the BBC. “We can’t make their situation better, but taking some of the stress away was definitely a priority for us.”
