The world’s most dominant women’s basketball team will take to the court for the first time at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, when Team USA takes on Team Japan on Monday.
Team USA is seeking its eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal and comes into the game with a 55-game winning streak dating back to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Simply put, it’s highly unlikely that Japan will be able to threaten that streak against a US team led by WNBA stars A’ja Wilson, Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi. The veteran stars are hoping Team USA’s dominance continues, but… Star newcomer Caitlin Clark I wasn’t selected for the team.
BetMGM The United States has a 20.5 point advantage over Japan.
A great three-pointer from Japan’s Mai Yamamoto. The U.S. clearly has the size advantage in this game. Yamamoto is just 5’5″ tall, while the tallest player on the team is 6’1″. Meanwhile, the U.S. team has only four players under 6′.
Chelsea Gray made a nice steal and passed it to A’ja Wilson for a mid-range shot, and Diana Taurasi provided a strong assist to Wilson to put the U.S. ahead, 10-4. After a slow start, the U.S. was finally starting to get some momentum on offense.
The game started off surprisingly close and low scoring due to turnovers on both sides, with the score tied at 4-4 after three minutes.
USA team to play Japan in Paris
Here we go! The Americans get two easy points from A’ja Wilson, who won the jump ball for Team USA.
Japan’s starting lineup
Japan will start with guards Saori Miyazaki and Mai Yamamoto, and forwards Saki Hayashi, Stephanie Mauri and Evelyn Mauri.
As if winning eight consecutive gold medals wasn’t impressive enough, the U.S. also has a 72-3 record at the Olympics. The team’s last Olympic loss was in 1992.
USA to drop starting lineup
The Americans will be represented by Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Napheesa Collier.
Today’s game is a rematch of the Tokyo 2020 finals, where the United States defeated Japan 90-75 to win the gold medal. Although the United States won relatively easily, Japan fought well and will be a tough opponent again today. This Japanese team is on tempo and good at three-point shots.
