In Florida, authorities announce first measles case in public school as experts stress vaccination

A case of measles was first detected in Florida in 2025.

One student at Palmetto High School tested positive for the illness, according to local sources and a Miami-Dade County public school.

Principal Jose Dotres spoke to the measles incident at a press conference Thursday, saying the school’s vaccine rate was 99.7%.

“Everything is very stable,” he said. “There are no other incidents measles at this point. “

Florida surgeon general Dr. Joseph Radapop also confirmed the measles incident at a press conference held in Tampa on Wednesday, saying “there could be a lot of them.”

“Obviously, we hope it’s best for everyone’s health,” he said.

In his remarks on various topics, Radapop admitted that measles is “highly contagious.” He said “it’s one of the most contagious diseases around,” and confirmed that the Florida Department of Health is in contact with the school about the incident.

“We provided information about options that parents have,” he said.

“One of them is very important – it tells us that the preferences and choices of healthy children are respected,” he said.

He also said, “We’re also making measles vaccines available… for parents who want them.

Meanwhile, Texas has reported the highest number of measles cases since January, marking nearly 160 cases.

Most of these cases were detected without vaccination; School-age children, It included one child who died of illness.

New Mexico reported the first measles death in an unvaccinated adult on Thursday, state officials said.

Ladapo also said it uses vitamin A as a treatment for measles for some people.

Experts say this option works for people who are deficient in vitamin A, but since vitamin A is not an alternative, vaccination is the only way to prevent measles.

Doctors say that the measles vaccine given long ago may not be very effective now

Dr. Daniel Clitzkes, director of the infectious diseases department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, told Fox News Digital that inappropriate administration of vitamin A could lead to toxicity and what is known as hypervitaminosis.

“Therefore, people should not administer their children common vitamin A supplements purchased from pharmacies or health food stores,” he said.

Dr. Neil Maniar, professor of public health services at Northertern University, emphasized that MMR vaccines are the “most powerful tool” to prevent and control outbreaks.
