We’ve all heard of “sitting is a new smoking,” but new research shows that being too long can have an effect beyond the lungs and heart.

Sedentary behavior for just 6 hours is associated with an increased risk of Neck painaccording to a new study published in BMC Public Health.

Researchers from Beijing, China have investigated 25 cohorts and case-control studies of neck pain and sedentary behavior among over 43,000 participants.

“I’m a spine surgeon – the way your posture is killing your back.”

The analysis revealed a “significant relationship” between the two factors.

Screen-based sedentary behaviors, such as using mobile phones and computers, were at the highest risk of neck pain. Research shows that watching TV poses no major risk.

“As you tend to sit more, the risk of developing neck pain increases.”

Dr. Arthur Jenkins, a spine surgeon in New York, commented on the findings.

“As most of the activities people do when they are sedentary, it’s not surprising to say that six-hour sedentary activity is strongly correlated with neck pain,” an expert who wasn’t working on the study told Fox News Digital.

“People watch TV during sit-ins, I’m looking at their mobile phones Or you work at a desk, and most of these involve having your head in a good looking position,” he said.

This position places extra tension on the back of the neck and on the front of the disk space, he added.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Multi-specialist doctor Dr. Azza Halim, who was not involved in the study, agreed that long-term sitting could be a risk factor for musculoskeletal problems.

The doctor emphasized the importance of practicing regular daily movements, stretching and ergonomic adjustments, and emphasized “mitigating the negative health effects of sitting for long periods of time.” (istock)

“I know that sitting for a long period of time, especially with posture and inadequate ergonomic support, will definitely put a lasting strain on the cervical vertebrae and associated muscles, ultimately causing stiffness, muscle imbalances and chronic discomfort,” she said.

“Studies show a clear dose-response relationship. As sedentary times increase, there is also a risk of developing neck pain,” Halim noted.

“As shown, sitting for more than six hours a day is associated with 88% risk compared to minimal sedentary behavior.”
