Chicago O’Hare alerts of measles detected in international traveler

Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued a warning against potential exposure to measles at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

In a news release on April 30th, the department identified two A case of measles has been confirmed In Cook County.

These are the first two cases in the county following the state’s first confirmed incident in adults in southern Illinois on April 23.

One case was identified as a suburban Cook County adult with an unknown vaccination status that sought medical care at a local hospital on April 28th.

The second case was identified in Chicago adults I traveled internationally to O’Hare Airport in April.

The outbreak of measles declared in eight states, including Michigan’s first in five years, has now been declared

A patient who received a first dose of the MMR (measles-mumpsulvera) vaccine reported the onset of a rash on April 25th.

Both individuals have been isolated at home since their diagnosis.

As of May 1, there were a total of 935 confirmed cases of measles throughout the US.

The state health department has listed the following locations where public exposure is possible:

  • Monday, April 21, 2025: Tasty Fitting, 3939 W. Irving Park Road.
  • Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025: O’Hare Airport10am to 8pm, especially Terminal 1
  • Wednesday, April 23, 2025: O’Hare Airport, 10am to 8pm, especially Terminal 1
  • Friday, April 25th, 2025: Aldi: 7235 39th St, Lyons, IL 6053, 10am to 12:30pm
  • Sunday, April 27, 2025: Shell: 3901 S. Harlem Avenue, Stickney, Illinois 60402, 10 am to 12:30pm
  • Monday, April 28, 2025: Mobile: 2945 S. Harlem Avenue, Bellwin, Illinois 60402, 10:20am to 1pm

IDPH urges all people over 12 months to receive two MMR vaccines before traveling internationally.

Interim Cook County Public Health Office COO Dr Kiran Joshi added that despite the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine, there is a revival of measles in the United States.
