Use chatgpt In the long term, it can have a negative effect on brain function.

That’s according to a study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Big language model (LLM) Writing multiple essays over a period of four months can interfere with cognitive abilities.

In this study, 54 participants were divided into three groups.

One group wrote their essays using ChatGpt, an LLM product created by Openai.

According to a press release from MIT, the second group only used search engines, while the third group only used their own brains.

Participants received three sessions that completed the same assignment. Then, in the fourth session, the LLM group was asked to write essays without tools, and the “brain-only” group was asked to use LLM.

During each session, the researchers recorded participants Brain activity To assess “cognitive involvement and cognitive load” using EEG monitors and determine neural activity, the release states.

Participants also provided their own feedback during the interview.

Human teachers and artificial intelligence agents recorded the assessments.

“EEG analysis “We presented robust evidence that LLM, search engines, and brain-only groups had very different neural connectivity patterns, reflecting diverse cognitive strategies,” the researchers wrote.

Participants showed less brain connectivity when using tools that helped them write essays, the study found.

“The brain group of brains showed the strongest and widest networks. The search engine group showed intermediate engagement. LLM support elicited the weakest overall bond,” the researchers wrote.

In the fourth session, participants who switched from LLM to brain only showed “weak neural connectivity” and less cognitive engagement.

The LLM Group also had a poor ability to remember information from written essays.

Those who switched from the brain to LLM have a “higher memory recall”; Cognitive involvement.

Based on these findings, the researchers stated that there could be a possibility that “learning skills could be reduced” among LLM users.

“While the use of LLM had a measurable impact on participants and initially revealed benefits as demonstrated over the course of the four sessions, participants in the LLM group were worse than their counterparts in brain-only groups at all levels. [and] Scores,” they wrote.

The survey results have been uploaded to Arxiv, a preprint service, but I don’t have one yet Peer reviewedas the researchers pointed out, “all conclusions should be treated with caution and as preliminary.”

Additionally, there were limited numbers of participants all from the same geographical area.

“It is important to include more participants from diverse backgrounds, such as experts from different fields and age groups, for future work, and to ensure that the research is more gender-balanced,” the researcher said.

Only ChatGpt was used in this study. Future research could incorporate other LLMs.

The EEG technology used to analyze brain connections may also have some limitations as researchers shared plans to use fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) in future research.

“Our findings are context-sensitive and focus on writing essays. Educational environment It may not be generalizable across tasks,” they said.

“Future research should also consider investigating the longitudinal effects of tool use on memory retention, creativity and writing flow ency.”

Dr. Harvey Castro, a Texas-based ER physician and “AI futurist,” said the study is viewed as a “neurowake-up call” in particular for the younger brain.

“ChatGpt can make it 60% faster, but that speed comes at the price of neural engagement,” Castro, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.

“Brain connectivity collapses from 79 neural links to just 42, with 83% of users unable to quote their essays in a few minutes. Neuroplasticity studies say that brain development feels this hit the most intense.”

In emergency care, doctors call this a “failure to encode,” Castro said.

“The brain doesn’t process and store information,” he said. “When neural connectivity drops by almost half, researchers are considering what they call “cognitive debt.” ”

for Medical Studentthe inability to encode and recall information under pressure could have serious implications for clinical decision-making, Castro noted.

“The same neural networks that integrate essay information are involved in diagnostic inference,” he said.

While long-term use of LLMS is convenient, experts warned that cognitive muscles can “atrophy” over time.

However, it was one encouragement.

“When people with strong basic skills later used ChatGPT, they showed improved connectivity,” Castro said. “Keys don’t avoid AI, they build cognitive strength first.”

In education, he emphasized the need for a period of “cognitive development without AI.”

“The stakes are high enough, and the entire generation can act based on preliminary data. Brain development It’s a high stake. ”
