The nicotine pouch is elevated Dangers to childrenaccording to a recent study from the Abigail Wexner Institute at the National Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus, Ohio.

The pouch contains dissolved powders made with nicotine and flavorings, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that between 2010 and 2023, 134,663 cases of intake of pouches, steam and other nicotine products were reported among children.

The “Western Diet” has been accused of increasing digestive risks among younger adults

Researchers analyzed calls to the national venom data system related to accidental nicotine intake Between the children Under 6 years old.

Pouch intake rose 763% between 2020 and 2023. Serious medical outcomes More than other nicotine products such as gum/lozenges, liquids, powders/granules, tablets/caplets/caplets.

Gary Smith, MD, director of the NCH Injury Research and Policy Center, told Fox News Digital that Nicotine Pouch was not tracked with National Poison Center data until 2020.

“However, between 2020 and 2023 (latest data from the study), the rate of unintended intake of nicotine pouches by young children increased at a fast rate, even if the rate of intake of other formulations of nicotine was reduced,” he said.

This study found a 59% increase in nicotine intake between 2010 and 2015. It was driven primarily by liquid and solid nicotine products.

From 2015 to 2023, liquid nicotine intake decreased by 45%, and overall nicotine intake accidents decreased by 34%.

The study has several limitations, and Smith shared. For one, the National Toxic Data System is “a passive surveillance system and therefore underestimates the true number of nicotine intakes. Our kids Under 6 years old. ”

“The data is self-reported and cannot be fully verified at the poison centre,” he added.

Smith also noted that the study did not analyze nicotine doses and could be “data errors and missing data.”

Smith noted that an overall decrease in nicotine intake may be related to the passage of the process. Federal and State Laws.

In 2015, Congress passed the Child Nicotine Addiction Prevention Act, which became a law that would allow liquid nicotine packaging to withstand children. “This suggests that the law can make a difference,” Smith said.

Researchers say there is an opportunity for further improvement in terms of passing preventive measures.

“Many Nicotine Products “It’s seasoned and sold in colorful packaging that may be attractive to young children,” he warned.

Given that nicotine pouches present “a serious and growing risk of toxic intake” among young children, Smith calls for continuous surveillance and prevention efforts.

Nicotine toxicity affects nausea, vomiting, and Hypertensionfast heart rate, seizures, difficulty breathing, coma, death, he told Fox News Digital.

Smith advised that parents suspected that their child had taken a nicotine pouch should call the National Poison Help Number at 1-800-222-1222.

“The safest choice is to keep all nicotine products out of your home,” he said. Otherwise, they should be kept safe and out of reach.
