Americans eat foods advertised as “healthy” every day that may be secretly sabotaging their health, a doctor warns.

Dr. Mark Hyman, physician and co-founder of Functional Health in California, said: American daily diet It’s full of unhealthy ingredients.

“The amount of refined starch and sugar that’s out there is just astounding to me, given what we know about how harmful refined starches and sugars are,” he said in an interview on FOX News Digital. “I don’t think people really understand.”

Food pyramid backlash: Doctors point out that the low-fat era may have promoted obesity and diabetes

Hyman, author of the new book “Food Fix Uncensored,” said he is “surprised” by what people in particular are eating. for breakfast.

“People just eat sugar for breakfast,” he says. “We also have muffins, bagels, croissants, and coffee and tea with sugar.”

In addition to traditionally sweet breakfast options, some cereal brands and breakfast staples are embracing new “protein-rich” menu items and products, including: health trends Encourage eating more protein.

“We’re seeing the impact of protein in certain things right now,” Hyman said, noting that many protein smoothies are “loaded with sugar.”

The doctor also pointed out that some popular cereals are marketed as containing protein. “My joke is that if there’s a health claim on the label, it’s definitely bad for you,” he said.

Rather than starting your day with “quick fixes” or processed foods, Hyman suggests choosing whole sources of nutrition. protein and fat For breakfast, he added, “it’s okay to have a little bit of carbs.”

For breakfast, Hyman said she drinks a protein shake with whey protein, avocado and frozen berries. Eggs and avocado are also options for a good combination of protein and fat, he adds.

“It’s not that complicated. People just need to consider that breakfast is not dessert,” he says. “No wonder we’re in this situation. obesity cycle And diabetes. Currently, one in three teenagers has type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. That’s just a crime. ”

Instead of counting calories and running into a calorie deficit, lose weight Hyman suggests focusing instead on how certain foods make you feel and how they affect your health.

“Given how different types of calories affect your biology, you just have to choose what you eat and don’t worry about how much,” he told FOX News Digital.

“For example, if you go on a diet That way it won’t cause an insulin spike and will be lower in starch and sugar and higher in protein and fat. No blood sugar fluctuations, no insulin spikes, no hunger fat storage…you can break that cycle. ”

According to Hyman, people are more likely to “self-regulate when eating real food” rather than processed food, which “bypasses the normal mechanisms of satiety, fullness, and brain chemicals.”
