Springdale health officials announce West Nile virus detected in mosquito population
Showers and gusts of wind on the back of the barrel. How long will this rain last and will this cool weather continue through the weekend? And in the midday election bulletin, actor, Democratic donor and Kentucky native George Clooney published a shocking opinion piece within the hour, joining President Biden’s reelection. It’s been a year since a 9-year-old girl was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Her loved ones are remembering her today on the anniversary. This is WLWT News 5. The system brought several storms to the Cincinnati metropolitan area overnight and is still impacting them. According to Duke Energy, about 1,900 customers are currently without power. Around 6:30 this morning, they were down to about 100. Obviously, they’re working on something there. Let me turn to meteorologist Allison Rogers. You’ve been watching this forecast. You’ve been watching the storm come in live with Kevin all night. And this is what we’re left with. Yeah. And part of the reason for the power outages is, I was looking at the map earlier and I said tree branches fell. So you can see that as the winds continue this afternoon, tree branches could break. We’re not expecting the winds to get super strong, but we still could see some 30-40 mph gusts at times today and that’s possible throughout the day. Right now, we’re still getting some light rain in a few places this afternoon. It’s been light rain all morning. You can see light rain in places across Claremont County. We’ve got some areas of southeastern Indiana that are getting some light rain as well. We’ve got some areas from Newtonsville to Mount Orlove, some areas of the Cincinnati metro area, some areas into northern Kentucky. It’s light rain right now near Highland Heights, and east toward Anderson Township, Turpin, and along Highway 50 a little closer to Newtown. Parts of southeastern Indiana and northern Kentucky will continue to have similar conditions for the rest of today, with gusty winds throughout the rest of the day. In fact, afternoon gusts could be closer to 25:30 and even stronger. Now, I’m going to give you a weather map of the next few days because we’re going to have dry weather. But it looks like we’re going to have some heat coming in over the weekend. Let me show you how hot it is going to be when it gets hot. Megan. That’s great. Thanks, Allison. A family is busy today cleaning up after the remains of Beryl caused a tree to fall on their house. This is actually a picture of the damage that happened overnight. This is Euclid Road in Columbia Township. The homeowner said that a 100-year-old oak fell and put a hole in their roof.I was woken up in the middle of the night. But thankfully, no one was injured. A team from the National Weather Service is expected to be dispatched to Indiana today following reports of a tornado caused by the remains of Beryl. Take a look. This video captures what appears to be a tornado near a warehouse. It’s in Mount Vernon, east of Evansville. The warehouse was heavily damaged by the storm. The storm also left a trail of destruction in nearby residential areas. Many trees were down and roofs can be seen peeling off some homes. At least 19 homes and several buildings were damaged, and not far from there, a train derailed. This happened in the late afternoon. The derailment caused traffic delays in the area and the train flipped on its side. Thankfully, no one was injured, but it’s unclear if the derailment was caused by the storm. We bring you breaking Commitment 2024 coverage. Actor and Kentucky native George Clooney has joined the calls for President Biden to withdraw from the reelection campaign. Well, Clooney, the movie star and lifelong Democrat, wrote in an opinion piece in the New York Times today that Democrats would lose control of the presidency and Congress if Biden comes out on top. Clooney has been a longtime Biden supporter and fundraiser. The president has refuted calls to step down, arguing that he deserves a second term. It’s 12:02 and it’s been a year since a 9-year-old girl was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Silverton. Today, family and friends of Demya Pickens Barton are remembering her as they continue to wait for justice to be served. News Five’s Brian Hamrick joins us live from downtown, where Maya’s loved ones are gathering. Brian, there will be a lot of people wearing pink all over the place to honor her. Yes, there are. They’re calling it a march for justice, and they’re trying to remember what happened. And they’re trying to make sure the justice system knows that there are families here, and keep the pressure on the system. But the wheels of justice turn slowly. Some of us have gathered here. They’re wearing pink in memory of Demya Burton Pickens. She was shot and killed. A year ago today, she was at her grandmother’s house on Plainfield Avenue, and someone opened fire on the house. It was a drive-by style shooting. Now, three men have been arrested in connection with this crime. But again, justice takes time, and a year later, questions remain about what happened there and who is responsible. Dozens of bullets were shot into the house. It was a horrific scene. Today, we have people who have gathered for Maya’s family. Other groups are gathering here to try to stop the violence. They’re marching around the courthouse. They’re going to Central Parkway and they’re coming back and they’re going to get to the Justice Center. Again, this is all about keeping the memory of Demya Burton Pickens, the 9-year-old who was killed, in the public eye. And we’re going to keep the pressure up and make sure that those responsible are held accountable.

The Springdale Health Department announced that it recently collected a mosquito that tested positive for West Nile Virus. The department said the mosquito was collected from the southwest quarter of the community. Health officials said that West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of a West Nile Virus-positive mosquito, but in most cases, the person bitten will either not experience symptoms or will have a very mild reaction (flu-like symptoms). In rare cases, the West Nile Virus can cause more severe illness, such as paralysis, brain swelling, coma, or, in rare cases, death, officials said. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems due to pre-existing medical conditions, such as cancer or high blood pressure, are at higher risk of developing severe West Nile Virus symptoms. To protect yourself and your family from West Nile Virus, Springdale Health officials suggest the following: Drain any sources of standing water, such as buckets, tires, and bird baths Use mosquito repellent for any water bodies that cannot be immediately drained Mosquito repellent dunks are available at the Springdale Health Department office. Take measures to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home (e.g., repair window screens, keep doors closed); Use an EPA-certified insect repellent and reapply as directed; Cover exposed skin whenever possible; Use a tent with screens if camping or sleeping outdoors; Dress children with clothing that covers their arms and legs, weather permitting; Use mosquito netting over strollers or baby carriers; Do not use insect repellent on babies under 2 months of age; Spray repellent on children’s hands first, never directly on their face; For more information and support, visit the Springdale Health Department website.

Health officials say WNV is transmitted to humans through the bite of a positive mosquito, but in most cases those bitten either show no symptoms or only a slight reaction (like flu).
In rare cases, officials say WNV can cause more serious illness, including paralysis, brain swelling, coma and, in rare cases, death.
Older adults and people with weakened immune systems due to pre-existing conditions such as cancer or high blood pressure are at higher risk of developing severe WNV symptoms.
To protect yourself and your family from West Nile virus, Springdale health officials recommend the following:
- Drain standing water from buckets, tires, bird baths, etc.
- Spraying mosquito repellents in water bodies that cannot be quickly drained
- Mosquito repellent dunks are available at the Springdale Health Department
- Take measures to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home (e.g., repairing window screens, keeping doors closed)
- Use an EPA approved insect repellent and reapply as directed.
- Cover exposed skin as much as possible
- If you are camping or sleeping outdoors, use a tent with a screen
- If weather permits, dress your child in clothing that covers their arms and legs
- Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting
- Do not use repellents on babies under 2 months of age
- Do not apply insect repellent directly to your child’s face; spray it on their hands first.
