A woman who nearly died after a deadly bacteria invaded the tip of her nose is thanking baking soda for saving her life.
Beatrice Johnson nearly died six months ago after suffering from illness and stomach problems.
Doctors at Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Kent, England, found the 60-year-old woman in septic shock and urged her family to say goodbye.
But in a last-ditch effort to save her life, doctors added baking soda to her IV drip as an alternative to dialysis.
The unusual treatment was successful and within a few days Beatrice was “feeling much better”.
After 36 days, she was released from hospital and is recovering well, along with her sister.
“I never thought something so simple could save my life,” Beatrice said. “I honestly thought I was going to die.”
“I’m thankful that they never gave up on my life.
“The baking soda made it rise like a cake! No one expected us to be here today.”

Beatrice’s ordeal began when she began feeling unwell at home. Her condition worsened throughout the day and she found it difficult to even climb stairs.
Realising something was wrong, she called an ambulance and was taken to hospital within 10 minutes.
“When the paramedics arrived they couldn’t take my blood pressure. They were surprised I was still conscious.”
Tests revealed that her kidneys were beginning to fail and she would need dialysis. Beatrice was left unconscious and on life support while doctors called her three children to say their final goodbyes.

Despite the best efforts of her doctors, her condition continued to deteriorate, but they began prescribing sodium bicarbonate (commonly known as baking soda), an approved alternative to dialysis in severe cases.
A few days later, Beatrice made a miraculous recovery and came out of the coma within a week.
She “immediately felt like a new woman” and was taken off life support.
“After just one day, I became a different person.”
After she regained consciousness, doctors told her the tip of her nose had been eaten by a flesh-eating bug called necrotizing fasciitis, a rare, rapidly spreading and potentially fatal bacterial infection.

Antibiotics stopped the infection from spreading and she was released from hospital 43 days after being told she would die, and her nose is now on the mend.
“I’m amazed I’m still here.
“The recovery time has been incredible and I’m so grateful to the doctors.
“I never thought baking soda would save my life.”
