The news? It’s hot. Where I live (Los Angeles), we’ve had heat advisories in place for weeks, with temperatures reaching triple digits in some areas. Southern California is no exception. All across the country (and the world) people are experiencing record-breaking heat. sometimes with extreme consequences.

And given Severe Weather News Over the past few weeks, I thought it would be a good idea to write about something that would help cool the temperature down a bit, both figuratively and literally, so here it is. For months, I’ve been researching the drinks that people in hot places turn to to cool down. There are so many great things The world is big, after all, and much of it is warm, too much to fit into this newsletter. I wanted to share five of my favorite things to get me through the warmer days. In an apartment without air conditioning.
- Limonana, also known as Egyptian Mint Lemonade 🍋 I have rarely come across a lemonade that I don’t want to drink, but this is in a league of its own. The recipe I usedCreated by Egyptian-American sisters, this cocktail is simple, indulgent, and easily made vegan (just replace the coconut milk with whole milk). For fans of caipirinhas and mojitos, this tart, bittersweet drink is the perfect workday companion.
- Salvadorenha salad fresco 🍍Half drink, half fruit salad. Packed with pineapple, Pink Lady, Marañón and more, this Salvadoran punch proves that you can eat while you drink. I Karla Tatiana Vasquez’s new book, “SalviSoul Cookbook” (There are several alternatives, not all of which are readily available.) This one from Mrs. Mango is also pretty good.(Even if you don’t speak Spanish, this video is easy to understand.)
- Mango lassi 🥭 Am I going to lie and say I made a mango lassi in a dingy blender that’s only good for turning ice cream into a milkshake? No, I didn’t. have I drove down the street and bought a box full of stuff from my favorite restaurant. But if I were to try this, maybe Let’s start with the Tea for Turmeric recipe. (From a Pakistani-American food blogger whose recipes are virtually foolproof.)
- Mint tea 🍵 Haters will tell you that hot drinks don’t belong on this list. To them, I say: I believe in scienceSeriously, people in the hottest parts of the world have been drinking hot tea to cool down for thousands of years. The types of tea vary from culture to culture, but mint tea is one of them. Morocco’s national drink — has been my saving grace this summer.
- Red drink 🍉 There are many different versions (with different names) of this drink, from Dakar to Bridgetown to Galveston. The Red Drink is Often associated with JuneteenthIt’s versatile and cool enough to drink all year round. I’m a rooibos tea person, so I turn to it again and again. This is from Bryant Terry’s Afro-Vegan Cookbook.But the possibilities of this drink are endless. Recipes are everywhere.
Remember, prevention is better than cure.
