Six people, including two Vietnamese Americans, were found dead in a luxury hotel room in central Bangkok. Thai Police are investigating the possibility that he may have been poisoned.
According to Bangkok Metropolitan Police chief Thiti Saengsangwan, the body was discovered by staff in a fifth-floor room at the Grand Hyatt hotel after a guest had checked out more than 24 hours earlier.
Police said the incident did not appear to be a robbery, there were no signs of physical violence on the body, and they believe the body was not self-inflicted.
But Mr Titi said there was a cup with traces of white powder in it and untouched food that had been ordered earlier in the room, and he said he could not rule out poisoning.
Authorities are now searching for a seventh person who may be involved in booking the hotel and may be a suspect.
The four other people killed were Vietnamese nationals. Thi Thi said police believe one of the group members tried to reach the door but fell before he could.
Police were filmed guarding the entrance to the five-star hotel on Tuesday after the body was discovered.
The US State Department said it was “aware of reports that two Americans have been killed in Bangkok.”
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family. We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“When a U.S. citizen dies abroad, the responsibility for determining the cause of death falls on local authorities. We communicate frequently with local authorities in cases involving the death of a U.S. citizen, and we will certainly do so here,” Miller said.
Miller said he didn’t know if the fatal accident was mentioned in Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s call with his Thai counterpart, because the call may have taken place before the State Department learned of the accident.
Last year, Thai woman Sararat Ransiutapong arrested He was accused of killing his friend with cyanide. He was charged with at least 13 crimes. Another poisoning case that shocked the nation involved allegations of premeditated murder.
