It wasn’t until 1992 that astronomers confirmed the existence of planets outside our solar system, and over the next 30 years, researchers have discovered at least 6,660 exoplanets in nearly 4,900 systems. Martin Walzig We turn those staggering numbers into striking infographics.
Using three public databases — the Exoplanet Encyclopedia, the NASA Exoplanet Archive, and ExoKyoto — Vergic compiled information on the size and equilibrium temperature of about 1,600 exoplanets, as well as their likely colors. Because current technology cannot identify their exact textures and colors, he relied on existing illustrations, possible clouds or haze, and the colors of the planets. Sudarsky scaleclassifies planets into five categories according to the properties of their atmosphere.
“We discovered a wide variety of exotic worlds, including hot Jupiters with clouds of molten rock, watery worlds covered in unfathomably deep super-oceans that span the globe, red-hot lava planets, and planets darker than coal,” the artists write.
In Exoplanet Zoo, Varcik arranged about 1,100 renderings according to the amount of heat they receive from their stars, creating a fascinating gradient of color and size for easy comparison. Ice and Rock Worlds is similar, but it features about 900 exoplanets that are thought to be terrestrial planets like Earth.
As well as discussing far away galaxies and the unknown possibilities they hold, Varzic also touches on the question of life outside our solar system.
Because the first life forms developed on Earth soon after its formation, many planets in the habitable zone are likely to harbor at least primitive single-celled life. The longer a planet remains in the habitable zone after formation, the greater the chance that complex life exists on its surface… In our galaxy alone, it has been calculated that there are about 9 billion Earth-sized planets within the habitable zones of stars, which works out to more than one planet for every living human.
