Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Brain aging.

The perpetrator is a protein called ferritin light chain 1 (FTL1), which is described as an iron-associated protein identified as a “cognitively impaired pro-aging neuronal factor.”

The study, published in Nature Aging, compared how old and young mice changed genes and proteins in the hippocampus, the brain regions that cause learning and memory (regions that cause learning and memory).

According to science, what people living at age 100 have in common

Aging mice had a higher amount of FTL1, and fewer hippocampal brain cells connections decreased. Cognitive AbilityAccording to a press release from UCSF.

When FTL1 artificially increased in younger mice, their brains began to mimic the brains and behaviors of older mice.

When proteins were reduced in older mice, they “recovered the young people, had more neuronal connections and worked better in memory tests.

FTL1 also slowed the metabolism of hippocampal cells in older mice.

However, researchers have found that treating these cells with metabolic stimulating compounds prevents these effects.

Dr. Saul Villeda, Associate Director and Senior Author of the paper at the UCSF Bakar Aging Research Institute, said he views these findings as “reversal of obstacles.”

“It’s not just about slowing or preventing symptoms,” he said in a statement in a press release.

“There are more opportunities to mitigate the worst outcomes of old age. The biology of aging. ”

Dr. Paul Saffier, founder of New Jersey’s Coaxial Neurosurgery Specialist, called these findings “really interesting” in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“There’s no doubt that when proteins accumulate in different parts of the brain, certain neurodegenerative disorders occur,” he said. “Alzheimer’s disease It is directly linked to the accumulation of amyloid proteins in the brain. ”

“If there is a mechanism that can slow and reverse the accumulation of this FTL1 protein in the hippocampus, the main memory center of the brain, it is because it can improve/enhance cognition.”

Previous studies have shown that it can be reduced by regulating sugar and protein. Aging ratepointed out.

“I support this research and I’m sure there will be a breakthrough in the field in the end,” he added.

This study was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, the Bakar Institute of Aging, and the National Institute of Aging.
