The study, published in the journal Joint Bone Spine, examined global burden of disease (GBD) 2021 data across 204 countries over a 30-year period.

Data measured gout prevalence, incidence, and life years people with disabilitiestracks global trends over time. The results showed global increases in all three outcomes.

Prevalence and years of disability increased by 66% and incidence by 62%. In 2021, nearly 14% of new gout cases worldwide will be among people aged 15 to 39, a study has found.

Men aged 35 to 39 and people in high-income areas had the highest burdens, but high-income North America topped the list with the highest burden rates.

It was also found that men live longer with gout for the following reasons: BMI is highWomen, on the other hand, are more likely to suffer from this condition in association with impaired kidney function, the study noted.

Although the number of infected people is expected to increase worldwide due to population growth, the study predicted that the number of infected people per capita will decrease.

The researchers noted that data quality, particularly in low-income settings, may have posed a limitation to extensive GBD data.

Gout is Common forms of arthritis According to the Mayo Clinic, it involves sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the joints. Most often it occurs on the big toe.

This condition occurs when urate crystals build up in the joints. They are formed when there are high levels of uric acid in the blood, which the body produces when it breaks down natural substances called purines.

Gout flare-ups can occur at any time, often at night, and the affected joints feel hot, swollen, tender, and sensitive to the touch.

Purines are also found in certain foodsAccording to the Mayo Clinic, people like red meat, organ meats like liver, and some seafood like anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, trout, and tuna. Alcoholic beverages, especially beer and drinks sweetened with fructose, can also increase uric acid levels.

Uric acid normally dissolves in the blood and passes through the kidneys into urine, but when the body produces too much or too little uric acid, it can cause a buildup of urate crystals. These are sharp, needle-like objects that cause pain, inflammation, and swelling in the joint and surrounding tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Risk factors for gout include foods high in purines, being overweightTherefore, more uric acid is produced in the body, making it difficult for the kidneys to remove it.

Certain conditions such as: untreated high blood pressurediabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, heart and kidney disease, and certain medications can increase your risk of gout.

A family history of gout may also increase your risk. Men are more likely to develop this condition because women tend to have lower uric acid levels, but the condition generally develops after menopause.

Untreated gout can lead to worsening pain and joint damage, experts warn. It can also lead to more serious conditions, such as recurrent gout, advanced gout, and kidney stones.
