Marvel has Deadpool and Wolverine breaking records, Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor DoomApparently, a great DC production is coming to Amazon Prime Video: Batman: The Caped Crusader, which will be released on August 1st.
Although it is animated rather than live-action, it evokes the era of Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series and retains its charm and quality, so in that respect it is a good choice. Rotten Tomatoes 100% The show received positive reviews from 24 critics, which is no easy feat, making it Amazon’s highest-rated show in a long time, even if it won’t pull in the numbers of, say, The Boys.
The series sees Timm himself returning as creator alongside JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves, and was already set for a second season after a somewhat shaky start in development at Cartoon Network and HBO Max. This plan didn’t pan out, but the show continued to be pitched and was eventually picked up by Amazon.
One of the unique aspects of this series is that it is set in the 1940s, rather than in the present day or the 90s when the original animated series aired. The voice cast is also very impressive, featuring the following actors:
- Hamish Linklater – Batman
- McKenna Grace – Natalia Knight
- Minnie Driver – Oswald Cobblepot
- Gentleman Ghost – Toby Stephens
- Christina Ricci – Catwoman
- Jamie Chung – Harley Quinn
- Diedrich Bader – Harvey Dent
- Reid Scott – Onomatopoeia
- Jason Watkins – Alfred Pennyworth
- Tom Kenny – Firebug
- Crystal Joy Brown – Barbara Gordon
- Bumper Robinson – Lucius Fox
- Michelle C. Bonilla – Renee Montoya
- Dan Donahue – Clayface
- Eric Morgan Stuart – Jim Gordon
As you can see, the show only features a few traditional Batman villains, including a gender-flipped Penguin, but characters like Catwoman and Harley Quinn are also featured, and these reviews have me excited to see what this cast will play.
For Batman fans, this will be a must-see. I’ll be very impressed if it manages to maintain a 100% score, which I think is likely, as it’s likely to be picked up by reviewers who are knowledgeable about Batman. Also, if it manages to portray the Batman warrior as well as he looks, it will definitely be a positive.
I’m interested to see how it does on Netflix’s top 10 list, as it hasn’t been heavily promoted and is certainly a bit niche – I’m not expecting it to do as well as, say, Invincible – but with season 2 already underway, I’m excited to see how it plays out.
