Improved quality of life
I was sitting on the couch watching a show or movie when I got a phone call and I instinctively hit the mute button. After all, I don’t mean to be loud and rude, but I was happy and impressed to see the subtitles appear automatically. It’s like Apple TV It displays a certain instinct.
This is a new feature that’s built in by default. When you press the mute button on your Apple TV’s Siri Remote, subtitles will appear. That’s right. It’s a little quality of life improvement, but it automatically brings up subtitles when you mute. And of course, if you have captions enabled, it will mute the track.
Similarly, if you quickly rewind a movie or show (perhaps because you missed something), Apple TV will turn on subtitles until you return to the original time, making it easier to find what you missed and transcribing the exact dialogue for full comprehension.
Finally, if you’re a fan of foreign movies and TV shows, Apple TV will automatically turn on subtitles if they’re in a different language than the one your streaming box is set to, which is super convenient and saves you a bit of hassle if you’re not one to keep subtitles on all the time.

And like the best quality of life upgrades, these are all meant to solve pain points you might not have known existed. That’s a big theme of tvOS 18 this year. Of course, we love seeing pro shots. 4K I have city, nature and wildlife screensavers, but I also love displaying moments from my own photo library on the big screen…especially the family dogs.
