As part of an industry-wide recovery, Apple is expected to see a strong 21% increase in Mac shipments in the second quarter of 2024, the largest growth rate among global PC makers in the period.

Among major manufacturers, Apple and Acer led the growth, with Acer growing shipments by 14%. This marks the second consecutive quarter of growth for the PC industry, following a period of decline following a pandemic-driven buying surge in 2020 and 2021.
Ryan Rees, group vice president at IDC, noted that the combination of two consecutive quarters of growth, market excitement for AI-focused PCs, and commercial refresh cycles has provided a much-needed tailwind for the PC market. AI-focused PCs are expected to drive a new wave of upgrades, but IDC reports that only about 3% of PCs shipped this year are optimized for AI tasks. Apple’s Mac lineup is expected to gain further momentum with the integration of Apple Intelligence, positioning the company to capitalize on growing demand for AI-optimized PCs.
Apple’s shipments increased 20.8% from the second quarter of 2023, the largest increase among global PC manufacturers, followed by Acer with a 13.7% increase. Dell saw its shipments fall 2.4%, making it the only major company to experience a decline in the period. Gartner It shows similar numbers.
Global shipments excluding China grew by more than 5%, even as weak demand in China weighed on overall performance, according to IDC. Lenovo maintained its largest market share at nearly 23%, while HP grew 1.8 percentage points year over year to grab a 21% market share.
Canalys, another market research firm, report The global PC market is forecast to grow at a slightly higher rate of 3.4% year-over-year, reaching 62.8 million units in Q2 2024. Apple ranked fourth with 5.5 million units shipped and a 9% market share, up 6% year-over-year. Lenovo led the market with 14.7 million units shipped, followed by HP with 13.7 million units and Dell with 10.1 million units.
