NEW YORK — U.S. health officials announced Friday that they are recalling some Boar’s Head liverwurst and other deli meats. Listeria outbreak It has caused nearly 30 people to become ill and two to die.
Boar’s Head Provisions has recalled its liver sausage because it may be contaminated with Listeria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The company is also recalling additional deli meats that were produced on the same line and on the same day as the liverwurst.
The Department of Agriculture announced that samples of Boar’s Head liver sausage sold at a Maryland store tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The sample was taken from an unopened package and collected by the Maryland Department of Health as part of an investigation into Listeria infections.
Health officials said testing of liverwurst samples was ongoing to determine whether they were linked to the latest outbreak.
The infection was first reported last week. As of Thursday, 34 people had been infected, and all but one were hospitalized.
Two people died.
Authorities said the most common reported cases were from eating sliced turkey, liverwurst and ham from delis.
Listeria can contaminate food and make people who eat it sick.
Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.
It can be treated with antibiotics, but it is especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1,600 people get listeria food poisoning each year and about 260 die from it.
The Boar’s Head recall includes numerous products stamped with an Aug. 10 sell-by date, including bologna sausage, garlic bologna sausage, beef bologna sausage, beef salami, Italian Cappy Style Ham and extra hot Italian Cappy Style Ham.
Also included is the steakhouse’s Roasted Bacon Heat and Eat, which has a sell-by date of August 15th.
