Billy Horschel came the closest he’s ever been to winning a major championship.
Horschel weathered a bad weather round on Saturday to take the sole lead going into Sunday’s final round of The Open. He started the day at 4 under par and holds a one-stroke lead over the field at Royal Troon in Scotland.
It was the seventh time Horschel has had at least a share of the lead after 54 holes, and three of the last six have gone on to win. The last six major championship winners have also had at least a share of the lead after 54 holes.
Horschel is in a great position, but the Claret Jug remains to be seen. He will start at the same time as Thriston Lawrence, one of six golfers who is one stroke back at three under par. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is at two under par, and Shane Lowry, who has been in the running all week, is at one under par.

The wind is blowing
As the leaders begin their rounds, the flag is upright and the pole is bent.
Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, hit his approach shot just short of the green on the first hole but managed to make par, while Shane Lowry scrambled from a greenside bunker for par.
Only two groups have yet to tee off.

Justin Thomas voluntarily withdraws
So you start the day just four strokes behind the leader. By the time you head to the second tee, you’re down to seven. Justin Thomas opens his round with a triple on the first hole. How did that happen?
1st: OB
Second: Penalty
3rd: Fairway bunker
4th: 11-yard pitch
5th: Green
6th: Pat
7th: Hall

Jason Day gives back
After turning in 32, Day quickly bogeyed the 10th hole to get back above par. Of note, the back nine has been more difficult than the front nine all week.

Don’t overlook Jon Rahm
Rahm scored three birdies in three holes to improve to -1, a great start for the Spaniard.

Jason Day aims for early record
By the time Billy Horschel and Thriston Lawrence tee off an hour later, Jason Day will have just a few holes left to finish his round. Why does that matter? Day had just turned in 32, four under par for the round. He’s now at even par for the tournament, just four strokes behind. If he can get a few more birdies and improve his score early, he could be in surprisingly good position if the weather gets worse as the day progresses.

Weather and Las Vegas
The rain and fierce winds that dominated, and often caused chaos, through the third round have given way to calm grey skies and (for now) more manageable winds in Scotland. Birdies will be up for grabs. Ryan Fox is already in the clubhouse with a four-under 67, but the rain is on its way and is expected to start falling by the time the leading players start to tee off.
There are nine players within three strokes of leader Billy Horschel. Who does Vegas expect to win?
That would be Xander Schauffele at +350, followed by Scottie Schauffler (+375) and then Horschel at +550.
For Schauffele, who is unbeaten in 26 strokes, it’s his second major win of the season. Scheffler is looking for his third major and first outside of Augusta. And Horschel is still searching for his first major win.
