Daniel Brown tied for the lead with a bogey, Shane Lowry struggles
Daniel Brown reclaimed the lead with a bogey on the 13th to fall back into a tie with Billy Horschel. With the weather playing a part and conditions continuing to deteriorate, players seem excited to make par on some holes.
Shane Lowry, who led after 36 holes, struggled in the third round, with a birdie on the fourth hole, a double bogey on the eighth hole and consecutive bogeys on the eleventh and twelfth holes. Lowry is three over par for the day and four under par for the tournament.
Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele are also well within striking distance at four under par.
Scottie Scheffler loses a stroke on the 13th hole but is still within reach
Scottie Scheffler started fast with a birdie on the third hole, but lost a stroke on the par-4 13th hole to drop to 2-under for the tournament.
Scheffler is just three strokes behind leaders Billy Horschel, Daniel Brown and Shane Lowry.
Daniel Brown and Shane Lowry tied for lead at British Open
Shane Lowry and Daniel Brown fell into a coffin-shaped bunker on the eighth hole, and neither made it through unscathed.
Brown finished with a bogey and Lawrie finished with a double bogey. Both are now at 6 under, along with Billy Horschel, who birdied the ninth hole.
Xander Schauffele is at 5 under and Justin Rose is at 4 under after missing a birdie putt on the ninth hole.
Open Weather Bulletin: Rain in Royal Troon
Umbrellas are all the rage in the third round, but so are birdies.
Rain disrupted the third round at Royal Troon Golf Club but it didn’t stop players from challenging for the cup, with nine of the top ten players finishing under par in the third round.
The rain is expected to continue throughout the afternoon, leaving golfers’ bags and clothes soaked.
Kim Si-woo makes history at British Open
South Korea’s Kim Si-woo recorded the longest hole-in-on in British Open history on Saturday, ace-ing the 238-yard par-3 17th hole during the third round at Royal Troon.
Finishing at par 71, Kim selected a No. 3 iron from the bag and hit the ball on the front fringe, where it rolled down the putting surface and into the hole.
“I’ve had about six holes-in-one so far but this one is the most memorable,” he said of the magical moment on the 17th hole, which had never had a hole-in-one in any of the previous Open tournaments at Troon.
The longest hole-in-one to date in the Open was a 212-yard ace by Frank Lickliter II on the fifth hole at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2001.

It didn’t take long for the world’s number one ranked golfer to make his move in the third round of the British Open, when Scheffler sank a birdie putt on the third hole to move to three under par and close the gap to leader Shane Lowry to four strokes.
Shane Lowry tees off as others join leaderboard
Shane Lowry began the third round two strokes ahead of Daniel Brown and Justin Rose to begin his quest for the Claret Jug.
With rain starting to fall heavily in Scotland, Lawrie will be looking to maintain his low score from Saturday, after his tee shot on the first hole landed on the fairway and rolled into a bunker.
Russell Henley birdied the ninth and tenth holes to move to three under for the tournament. Xander Schauffele birdied the second hole to move to two under.
Scottie Scheffler tees off at the British Open
Under a gray court and raindrops drenching the ground, Scottie Scheffler is in the third round, looking to play in his second major tournament of 2024 after winning the Masters.
Scheffler begins the Open at 2 under par.
Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson tee off at the British Open
At 9:46 a.m. ET on Saturday, two LIV golfers teed off: Brooks Koepka, seeking his sixth major championship, and Dustin Johnson, seeking his third major.
Koepka and Johnson are both one over par and enter the day tied for 17th.
British Open weather forecast: Good conditions, low scores
With a change in weather forecasted for later in the day, several golfers were in contention for the championship.
Justin Thomas, Adam Scott and Sungjae Lim have swept the course in the third round and are each at five under par. Thurston Lawrence birdied five of his first six holes of the day and is now two under par. They are one of 24 golfers to finish under par in the third round so far.
Thomas in contention for victory after first nine holes
Justin Thomas also made his presence felt on Saturday. He got back in the red with his fifth birdie of the day on the par-3 eighth hole. He’s one under par, six strokes behind the leader.
Lim Seung-jae climbs the leaderboard
Lim Seung-jae had a breakthrough Saturday. He shot the lowest score of the day with a 65, which moved him up to 53rd place and into a tie for 16th. But he’ll need to watch out for Justin Thomas, who had a tough second round with a 78 and is in fifth place after eight holes.
Leader Shane Lowry is confident heading into the weekend
Leading the British Open standings after two rounds, Shane Lowry is feeling confident in everything but one thing heading into the weekend. The 2019 British Open champion was asked Friday if he considered himself a strong front-runner.
“I wouldn’t say I’m a good runner,” Lawrie laughed.
“For me it’s just about playing my game, shooting the best scores I can and seeing where I am at the end of the day,” Lawrie said. “Try not to worry about what other people are doing and just mind my own personal stuff. You never know, I’ve put myself on that level in some big tournaments and managed to beat them.”
The good news for Lawrie? He doesn’t have to run. Three of the last four 36-hole leaders or joint leaders in the British Open have won the Claret Jug.
Weather conditions may be a factor
Strong winds played a role in the second round at Royal Troon Golf Club, leaving the course wet for players with early tee times, and light rain and stronger winds are predicted for Saturday’s play, which could cause havoc for players with later tee times.
British Open moving day
Sungjae Lim, Adam Scott and Shubhankar Sharma are all off to strong starts in the third round of the British Open, with Lim and Sharma at -4 on 14 strokes (nine strokes behind the leader) and Scott at -4 on 10 strokes (eight strokes behind the leader).
