Brock Purdy scores 3 TDs in 49ers win
Brock Purdy caught three touchdown passes to lead the 49ers to victory over Tampa.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — About 30 minutes after being first. san francisco 49ers He is the first quarterback in history to attempt 20 or more passes in the same game and post a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Brock Purdy I had multiple thoughts.
First, Purdy was proud to write his name in the record books and be mentioned alongside Joe Montana. Montana is the only Niners starter to have a perfect rating on at least 10 attempts a game, a feat he accomplished in 1989. Second, Purdy pointed out that just because the passer rating didn’t improve doesn’t mean he believes it was a “perfect” game.
Third, Purdy deflected credit from his teammates and coaches for his performance against San Francisco. 27-14 victory against tampa bay buccaneers.
“What an honor,” Purdy said. “But at the same time, I feel like there are still some plays and things that I wish had come back. So I’m not completely satisfied with just that, but I think it was a great game with the players around me.” I think the play calling, all of that is a testament to the team. ”
Five minutes later, Purdy was asked if passer evaluation is a tool he and his fellow quarterbacks use to judge their plays.
“I still don’t really know what that means,” Purdy said, a smile on his face.
What Sunday meant for the Niners was a second straight win that moved them further away from the three-game losing streak that marred October and improved them to 7-3 with a one-game lead in the NFC West. For Purdy, it might have been his best game yet in a season in which that claim has already been made many times.
Making his 18th career start, almost a year after making his first NFL start against the Bucs, Purdy and the offense got off to a slow start in the opener. But Purdy made few mistakes the rest of the way, going 21-of-25 for 333 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, scoring 158.3 points the rest of the way.
His damage was about the same amount in both halves, albeit in different ways. In the first half, Purdy was 14-of-17 for 164 yards and one score. In the second, he went 7-of-8 for 169 yards and two scores, including a 77-yard strike to a receiver. Brandon Aiyuk He scored a touchdown early in the third quarter.
Most of Purdy’s accomplishments came against the Bucs’ man coverage, where he threw for a career-high 210 yards and scored all three touchdowns despite their defensive posture. Purdy currently has 16 passing touchdowns against Mann, the most in the NFL this season.
Despite all these gaudy numbers, teammates have grown accustomed to Purdy’s performance.
“Perfect game? Amazing” defensive end Nick Bosa Said. “I’m not surprised about him anymore. He’s awesome.”
Over the past two games, Purdy has looked more like the quarterback who helped the Niners get off to a 5-0 start than the quarterback who committed six turnovers (including all five interceptions) in three straight losses against the Niners. Ta. cleveland browns, minnesota vikings and cincinnati bengals. The only time Purdy really struggled in those three games was against Cleveland, but some on the outside were skeptical about how he would respond after the turnover.
From last week’s game against Jacksonville to Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, Purdy completed 40-of-51 passes, averaging 314.5 passing yards, six touchdowns, no interceptions, and averaging 12.3 yards per attempt.
“There will always be critics,” he says, running away. Christian McCaffrey Said. “He knows that. Everybody here knows that. And I like that he plays with a little bit of edge with the shoulder injury. I hope it continues because it pisses him off and he plays really well.”
For Purdy, there was no magic cure for whatever happened during the Niners’ three-game losing streak. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy’s play during the streak, which was recorded on film, was “incredible” and he didn’t have to panic or make any major adjustments.
But Purdy said it’s important for him to be hard on himself, to play with a sore shoulder, and for the league to constantly remind him that a pat on the back or a kick in the back is never far away. I believed. another.
“This is the NFL. You never know what’s going to happen on Sunday. That’s kind of the chip I was talking about,” Purdy said. “So you have to kind of go back and prove on every drive, every play that you can be a player for this team and earn it every week in practice, in meetings, wherever you are. That’s the mindset. ”I’ve been talking for the last few weeks about definitely tuning it more precisely, checking the details, and finding that chip again. ”
Ten games into the season, everything Purdy used for motivation seems to be working. Through Sunday’s game, he ranks first in the NFL in QBR (76.6), passer rating (109.9), yards per attempt (9.7), third in completion percentage (70.2%) and fifth in touchdown passes (18). He tied for 6th place in passing. Yards per game (266.2). His five interceptions are tied for second-fewest among starters.
Purdy’s 9.7 yards per attempt is the second-most through 10 games among players with at least 250 attempts in NFL history. He continues to date Boomer Esiason (9.8) in his 1988 year and Dan Marino (9.7) in 1984. aaron rodgers in 2011 (9.6) at that rate. Esiason, Marino and Rodgers all won the league’s Most Valuable Player award.
Purdy continues to answer every question about him, but perhaps the better question is: What can’t he do?
“I don’t know if he can run 15 feet.” [second 40-yard dash]” Shanahan said. “But everything we asked him to do, he did it at a really high level.”
