Although aluminum foil is commonly made for cooking, it’s actually a very versatile product, but one TikTok user is dividing viewers over the way he uses it.
In a video that has over 1.9 million views, @latingenx72 admits she’s been using aluminum foil incorrectly all this time. In the video, she opens a can of Goya tomato sauce and covers the can in aluminum foil so it can be stored in the fridge.
“Who says you can’t put a lid on a can and put it in the fridge? Mind your own business,” she captioned the video.

Viewers were shocked in the comments section and warned people not to leave food out in tins after opening them.
“Oh, if you store it in the can it could develop botulism,” one person said.
“My mom always said you should never store canned food in the fridge,” another wrote.
Others sided with the TikTok user, saying they too store food in a similar way and haven’t had any issues.
“I’ve been doing this my whole life and I’ve done it well,” one user commented.
“Wait no one said you couldn’t do this lol I’ve been doing this for years,” a second commented.
“My face reading the comments why don’t I do this lol. I’m so sick of doing it wrong,” a third joked.

What is botulism?
by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Botulism is “a serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves. Botulism can cause breathing difficulties, muscle paralysis, and even death.” However, the disease is extremely rare, with fewer than 1,000 cases per year in the United States.
According to the CDC, there are five main types of botulism, the first of which is food poisoning, which occurs when food is improperly “canned, preserved, or fermented.” “Foods that are improperly canned, preserved, or fermented at home can provide suitable conditions for spores to grow and produce botulinum toxin,” the CDC reports.
Even store-bought foods can be contaminated with botulinum toxin, but this is even rarer.
Is it okay to leave cans wrapped in aluminum foil in the fridge?
of The USDA states: “Unused portions of canned foods may be stored refrigerated in the can, but for optimal quality and flavor, store the unused portion in a food-grade glass or plastic container. Use within four days.”
But an opened can, even one sealed with foil, isn’t necessarily effective at keeping air out, so there’s still a risk of bacteria getting in. Growingwhich can lead to food poisoning like botulism, so to ensure optimal quality and safety, it’s best not to store food in cans.
But there are other, less commonly used uses for aluminum foil in the kitchen.
Food freezing
Aluminum foil seal Protect your food from air and moisture and prevent freezer burn. To do this, seal your food tightly in aluminum foil before putting it in the freezer. protected Frozen foods wrapped in aluminum foil will only last six months if properly wrapped. Freezer-burned foods look dull and have ice crystals on them. “Meat will turn gray-brown and often become tough or leathery, and fruits and vegetables will be visibly dry and shrivelled,” says Dr. Whirlpool.
Storing pie crust
Have you ever baked a homemade pie only to discover that the crust was burnt when you took it out of the oven? Aluminum foil can help prevent the crust from burning. Simply wrap the foil in a ring shape. Folding Cut a square of aluminum foil into a circle large enough to cover the pie, fold up the edges and place in the oven. When the pie is almost done, Baking (About 20 minutes left), safely remove the foil before placing back in the oven.
Sharpening scissors
It may sound strange, but aluminum foil is a great way to sharpen scissors. Instead of throwing away your dull scissors, tear off a piece of aluminum foil and get to work. To do this, tear off a piece of aluminum foil and fold it several times. Then, use your scissors to cut the aluminum foil into 12 strips. If your scissors are still not sharp enough, keep cutting the strips until the blades are sharp. Popular MechanicsThis process will remove any rust or dirt from the blades, but this method won’t work on damaged or dull scissors.
