The penultimate college football playoff rankings were released on Tuesday, so it’s time to take a look at the prospects of the teams still looking for a four-team field. Basically he has five teams vying for those spots, and he’s only four teams actually participating in the conference championship games on Friday and Saturday.
It’s a very short list this year, so we’ve expanded on this year’s story to see what the possibilities are for the remaining four New Year’s Six games outside of the playoffs. It’s related, so it doesn’t have a lot of flexibility, but it still has some intrigue.

If the Big 10 and/or Pac-12 Champions make it to the playoffs, the Bowl may choose a replacement player. Traditionally, they are the highest ranked teams remaining from those conferences. However, the Rose Bowl has the option of selecting participants from a similarly rated “cluster” of teams.
Had Michigan and USC both won this weekend, the Rose Bowl could have ended with a rematch of last year’s game involving Ohio State and Utah.
