Human infections from Drug-resistant bacteria As it is rising sharply in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns.

Laboratory testing of CDCs has shown a dramatic increase in the development of bacteria called NDM-producing carbapenem-resistant enterobacillus (NDM-CRE).

NDM-CRE belongs to a broader category of bacteria called carbapenem-resistant enteroceans (CREs), and has been shown to be the most resistant. Powerful antibiotics Available.

Common painkillers can fuel deadly superbugs that resist antibiotics, research warnings

“NDM” refers to an enzyme called New Delhi Metallobetalactamase, which is resistant to almost all antibiotics, according to the report.

In 2020, NDM-CRE caused approximately 12,700 infections and 1,100 deaths in the United States, the sources above said. Current spikes can make those numbers even higher.

NDM-CRE infection – Can include urinary tract infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound infections – It increased by more than 460% between 2019 and 2023, the CDC warned.

These infections are resistant to most antibiotics, making them extremely difficult to treat and can be fatal. NDM-CRE could quickly spread across the community.

It is also often misdiagnosed or overlooked, as it is not common in the US and may not be on the radar of healthcare providers.

“This rapid rise in NDM-CRE means we face an increased threat that limits our ability to treat some of the most severe bacterial infections,” said Daniel Rankin, an epidemiologist in the CDC’s Healthcare Quality Promotion Division, in a CDC press release.

“Choosing the right treatment has become more complicated than ever before, so it’s extremely important. Healthcare provider You will have access to the tests so that you can choose the appropriate targeted therapy. ”

Chief Science Officer and Executive Vice President of Hackensack Meridian Discovery and Innovation Center in New Jersey, PhD, David Perlin, David Perlin, PhD, were not involved in CDC research, but shared their response with Fox News Digital.

“This is one of many Drug resistance The current concern for Americans – he said, especially as we see surveillance has not kept up to the evolution of pathogens, “If we recognize the interests here, we can certainly do better.”

NDM-CRE infections are serious and can be life-threatening, Perlin confirmed.

“They are constantly adapted to their environment and can acquire a variety of drug resistance mechanisms that make treatment difficult,” he said.

“The fact that some of these strains carry a special carbapenemase gene — this allows organisms to resist treatment with the most common class of antibiotics, but is particularly dangerous to patients. Immune system compromise. ”

Perlin recommends that patients be “persistent” to interact with their physician about infectious diseases.
