Los Angeles (Associated Press) “bear” There was a commotion on Wednesday morning. Emmy Award Nominee With a record 23 nominations for a comedy series, “Shogun” led all nominees with 25 in a dominating year across all categories for FX.
“The Bear,” now in its second season, tells the story of a ragtag band of sandwich makers trying to build a top-notch restaurant and was nominated for two awards, including best comedy series and best actor in a comedy series for Jeremy Allen White, for which it won both. Ceremony postponed due to January strike — Also won the Best Actress award Ayo EdebiriShe previously won the Best Supporting Actress award.
The film was also boosted by a number of guest actor nominations, including two of the many Oscar winners nominated for the role, Jamie Lee Curtis and Olivia Colman.
“Shogun” took full advantage of the absence of last year’s top three nominees, “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us,” to sweep the drama categories and give FX 93 nominations, a typical strong year for HBO, which even in this “down” year garnered 91 nominations.
the Nominations These include Best Drama Series, Best Actress in a Drama Series (Sawai Anna), and Best Actor in a Drama Series (Sanada Hiroyuki).
The show shook up the drama competition when producers announced in May that they would move the critically adored show from the limited series category to the more prestigious drama category and consider making more than one season, despite the story of James Clavell’s novel about political maneuvering in early 17th century Japan having concluded.
“True Detective: Night Country” This was a positive sign for HBO, which is in between seasons of “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” after the cancellation of “Succession.”
The show, a quasi-spinoff of the “True Detective” series, led all limited or anthology series nominations with 19, including a best actress nomination for Jodie Foster, who plays a police chief investigating a mysterious death in the darkness of a northern Alaskan winter.
The cast will include Calli Reis, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role as Foster’s investigative partner and rival on the show. Lily GladstoneIn the same category, she became the first Indigenous woman to be nominated for an Emmy in an acting category for her role in “Under the Bridge.” DiPharaoh Oona Tai of “Reservation Dogs” was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, becoming the first Indigenous actor to be recognized as a lead actress.
She is the only Indigenous nominee in the acting category. According to Varietyis August Schellenberg, who was nominated for an Emmy in 2007 for his role as Sitting Bull in the HBO television movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”
“True Detective” is expected to compete against “Fargo,” which has 15 nominations, in the Emmy category for best limited series, giving FX a chance to win the triple crown if its favorite wins both the drama and comedy series awards.
Netflix has two nominees in the category. “Baby Reindeer” has become something of a cultural phenomenon in recent months and is a rising star at the Emmys, with 11 nominations, including best actor for star and creator Richard Gadd. “The Talented Mr. Talent,” a black-and-white reinterpretation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Talent,” received 13 nominations, including acting nominations for Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning. With those shows plus dozens of wins in craft and comedy special categories, Netflix led all nominations with 107 nominations.
Foster is one of several Academy Award winners to have been nominated for an Emmy, along with fellow multiple Academy Award winners Meryl Streep (nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building), Robert Downey Jr. (nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his multiple character roles in The Sympathizer), and Gary Oldman (nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series for Slow Horses).
Hulu’s “Only Murders” is nominated for an Emmy every year but has few wins, but this year it set a new personal best with 21 wins, second only to “Shogun” and “The Bear.” Stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were nominated for Best Actor, and Selena Gomez was nominated for Best Actress, her first Emmy nomination as a performer.
Old Emmy favorites are also back. Jon Hamm, who has been nominated 16 times and won one Emmy, including one for “Mad Men,” is now nominated twice: for Outstanding Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for “Fargo” and one for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show.” His “Morning Show” co-star Jennifer Aniston is considered by many to be the front-runner for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, in addition to her win for “Friends.”
And four-time Emmy Award winner Tony Shalhoub has a chance to win his fifth Emmy Award for reprising his role as Adrian Monk in “The Monk Movie.”
Former “Saturday Night Live” and “Bridesmaids” co-stars Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph are each nominated for best actress in an Apple TV+ comedy about wealthy women. Wiig was nominated for “Palm Royale” and Rudolph for “Root.” They were also nominated for their return as hosts of “SNL.”
The show will return to its traditional schedule, kicking off on September 15 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles and broadcasting on ABC.
Many shows still on the air, like “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us,” didn’t fall into this year’s target period, from June 2023 to May 2024, due to streaming or elite cable scheduling conflicts or strikes. These include “House of the Dragon,” “Bridgerton,” “Yellowjackets” and “Severance.”
And just like last year, “The Bear” got an all-new season following its nominated season on FX streaming partner Hulu, which was the show’s main driver of viewers and voters.
“The Crown” received 19 nominations and “Hucks” received 16, marking a triumphant return to the Emmys after a multi-year hiatus, and both shows had particularly critically acclaimed seasons.
Elizabeth Debicki is considered a front-runner for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the final days before her death in the sixth and final season of The Crown.
And Jean Smart will compete against Edebiri for best actress in a comedy series on the third season of “Hacks,” in which her comedian colleague Deborah Vance is trying to win a late-night show.
Also nominated in the category was Quinta Brunson, whose ABC show “Abbott Elementary,” which she created, has been a force for diversity at the Emmys thanks to nominations for Black actors including Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams, and was the lone bright spot in the major categories for traditional broadcast network programming.
Ralph’s fellow Emmy winner Tony Hale announced the nominations on Wednesday morning.
