In the nominations announced Wednesday, FX’s Japan-set historical epic led the way with 25 awards, including best drama series.
The category also includes the final season of The Crown, Amazon’s hit video game adaptation of Fallout, period drama The Gilded Age, the third season of The Morning Show, Amazon’s acclaimed remake of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, spy drama Slow Horses and Netflix’s Three Body Problem.
FX also led the comedy categories, with “The Bear” earning 23 nominations, including best comedy series, breaking the record for the most nominations a comedy has ever received in a single year.
Also appearing in the category were ABC’s hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the third season of “Hacks,” Apple’s star-studded new series “Palm Royale,” the highly anticipated “Reservation Dogs,” and FX’s cult favorites “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Only Murders in the Building.”
The latter murder mystery series received the third-highest number of nominations on the night’s show with 21 nominations, and star Selena Gomez’s first nomination in the category of best actress in a comedy series. She will be competing alongside Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Root’s Maya Rudolph, Hucks’ Jean Smart and Palm Royale’s Kristen Wiig.
Her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were up for top comedy actor honors, and will be competing against Matt Berry from “What We Do in the Shadows,” Larry David from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear” and DiPharaoh Woon-A-Thai from “Reservation Dogs.”
Netflix smash hit “Baby Reindeer” was also a surprise hit for the streaming service, earning 11 nominations. The drama series about a comedian who battles a stalker was nominated for Best Star in a Series. Richard Gadd Co-star Jessica Gunning also appears.
In the limited or anthology series category, it will be competing against “Fargo,” which has 19 nominations including star Jodie Foster, “Lessons in Chemistry,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Foster’s co-star Kali Reis and recent Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone also made history as the first Indigenous woman to be nominated in an acting category. Emmy AwardsGladstone was nominated for her role in the true-crime documentary series “Under the Bridge.”
British actors Idris Elba, Gary Oldman and Dominic West are up against Walton Goggins, Donald Glover and Hiroyuki Sanada in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category, while British actor Imelda Staunton is up against Jennifer Aniston, Carrie Coon, Maya Erskine, Anna Sawai and Reese Witherspoon in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category.
Recent Oscar winners Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are also nominated for their roles in “The Sympathizer” and “Only Murder in the Building,” respectively. Randolph will be competing against Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis in the comedy guest actress category.
Notable ignores include “The Curse,” the acclaimed surreal drama series starring recent Oscar winner Emma Stone, Kate Winslet’s HBO satire “The Regime,” and Apple’s big-budget drama “Masters of the Air,” which received just three technical nominations.
Eligible programs must air between June 2023 and May 2024.
The ceremony will take place in September, just eight months after the last one, which was postponed due to the Hollywood double strike. “This year has been deeply challenging for our industry and its employees, but it has also been rich in great programming, extraordinary performances and impactful storytelling,” Television Academy president Chris Abrego said in a statement.
The 76th Emmy Awards ceremony will be held on September 15th.
