It was updated on July 14th to add details on the different Pixel 9 color options.
Google is preparing to launch its new Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones, but there’s some disappointing news for users hoping to upgrade to the latest AI-powered devices.
French news site Deal Loves Magazine Google has announced pricing details for its upcoming smartphones, and while the prices are listed in euros, the two flagship Pixel devices — the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL — are more expensive in the local market.
First up is the Pixel 9. The entry-level 128GB model is priced at €899, which is €100 more than last year’s Pixel 8 128GB model. The top-of-the-line 256GB version is a bit cheaper but still more expensive than last year’s model, at €999 compared to €859 for the Pixel 8.
As for the Pixel 9 Pro, the 128GB model will cost €1,099 – roughly the same as last year’s Pixel 8 Pro, but the 256GB and 512GB models of the Pixel 9 Pro are more expensive than their 2023 equivalents.
However, there is one thing to note here.
Google will be releasing three standard Pixel 9 models (and a fourth foldable model), with this year’s Pixel 9 Pro featuring the upgraded specs you’d expect from the Pro label, but retaining the small form factor of the Pixel 9. If you want the Pro specs in a larger size similar to what the Pixel 8 Pro has, you’ll need to step up to the Pixel 9 Pro XL… Prices start at €1,199. This price restores a €100 premium over the Pixel 8 Pro, and is the same as the Pixel 9’s premium over the Pixel 8.
Prices for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will also start at 1,899 euros for the 128 GB model and 2,029 euros for the 256 GB version.
Update: Sunday, July 14th: Detailed information Details of the various Pixel models have emerged, with colours for four models reported by European retailers.
The Pixel 9 will come in colors that Google has named Obsidian, Porcelain, Cosmo, and Mojito, and it’s fair to assume that the rose hue of the Cosmopolitan cocktail will match the Pixel’s Cosmo hue, which suggests that the Pixel Mojito will have a pleasant, sharp green flavor.
Also available are Obsidian and Porcelain, with Obsidian being an option on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and Porcelain also available on the 8 Pro.
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are expected to introduce hazel and pink hues in addition to obsidian and porcelain, and while there are some doubts about the availability of these four colors, there is a chance that some will be available on the higher storage tiers.
Finally, the listing for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold lists only two colors: a muted black and an off-white called Obsidian and Porcelain.
Google’s launch event is on August 13th, just 10 months after last year’s announcement, and all four Pixel 9 models are expected to be unveiled. No doubt Google will use the opportunity to promote its approach to AI in smartphones. Last year’s announcement was the catalyst for the current rapid move towards AI, and its announcement early later this year will help define the AI market.
