Google Wallet is preparing to release a new feature that will allow users to convert physical documents into passes within the app, after announcing the feature earlier this year.
One of the new Android announcements at Google I/O Support for “digital text pass” within Google WalletThe idea here is to let you scan different kinds of physical documents in the Wallet app and turn them into digital cards within the app for easy access, which appeared in the “Everything Else” section of Google’s initial teaser.
The idea was to allow users to store documents within the app that may not officially support Google Wallet, such as insurance documents, membership cards, or event tickets, which don’t support Google Wallet.
Now, let’s take a closer look.
Dear all, Android Authority I was able to access the “Everything Else” pass settings in Google Wallet and see what options it offers.
These include:
- Point Card
- passport
- Residence permit
- Student card
- Taxpayer ID Card
- Vehicle Registration
- Voter ID Card
- Library Card
- Health insurance card
- driver’s license
- Automobile insurance card
- business card
- other
In the screenshot, the number of categories appears to be limited by the document scanned (apparently an ID card of some kind), and once scanned, you can also manually edit the captured information or create additional fields.
A photo of the original Pass will be kept alongside the digital reproduction, along with a disclaimer citation stating that it is not official and is not a substitute for a physical copy.
This pass is created by the device owner and may contain inaccuracies, it is not an official ID, is not a substitute for physical ID, and cannot be used for verification.
The usefulness of making such digital copies is likely limited, especially for ID documents: Google Wallet is gradually starting to support driver’s licenses and passports in accordance with government regulations, but it’s unclear where such copies would be useful beyond providing easy access to the numbers and information they contain.
Support for the “Everything Else” pass in Google Wallet isn’t yet available in the latest version, v24.26.650309275, but it works if you enable it manually, so it’s a good sign that the feature may debut soon. Google Wallet Notifications Support Widespread launch in June It was announced in May alongside the “everything else” pass.
