Could the Swifties and “Hallmark” — a nickname for fans of Hallmark Channel shows — team up to create a hit love story set in the world of Kansas City’s NFL team, “Holiday Touchdown”?
Judging by a panel about the project, which was part of the Hallmark Sessions during the Summer 2024 Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena today, cast members and producers seem pretty confident that fans will be giving “Holiday Touchdown” a roaring cheer.
“Holiday Touchdown” is a Hallmark Channel show. ‘Countdown to Christmas’ Holiday Movie Lineupwill celebrate its 15th anniversary later this year.
Rather than a pop culture-backed romance between a famous pop star and a Kansas City star player, the story focuses on Alana (played by Hunter King), a die-hard Kansas City fan who wants her family to win the team’s “Fan of the Year” contest.
Derrick (played by Tyler Hines), the Kansas City team’s director of fan engagement, meets with Alana to try to determine whether her family has the “Fan of the Year” qualities to help them win.
A panel discussion about “Holiday Touchdown” in Pasadena on Thursday included actors Hines, King, Ed Begley Jr. and Diedrich Bader, as well as Hallmark Media senior vice president of programming Samantha DiPippo, Lara Klug, chief marketing officer for the Kansas City NFL team and Julie Sherman Wolf, who wrote the screenplay for “Holiday Touchdown.”
Panel attendees were given a glimpse into what DiPippo described as his “biggest film yet.”
“Holiday Touchdown” is currently in production in Kansas City, Missouri, home to not only an NFL team but also Hallmark.
In addition to the actors on the panel, Hallmark announced that the cast of “Holiday Touchdown” will also include Megan Price, Richard Riehl, Christine Ebersole, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, team members Trey Smith, Mecole Hardman Jr., Clyde Edwards-Helaire and George Karlaftis, as well as “other upcoming draftees.”
Author Sherman Wolf admitted to being a die-hard San Francisco 49ers fan, but he could write about Kansas City.
“That doesn’t mean I don’t want a rematch,” she said.
Panelists spoke of the Kansas City organization’s promotional video, “Falling For Football,” as something of a precursor to “Holiday Touchdown.” A humorous take on a Hallmark Channel-style love story, the video featured Hines, Janel Parrish and Donna Kelsey (the mother of Travis and his brother Jason), among others.
In addition to the session on “Holiday Touchdown,” Hallmark’s presentation included a panel promoting projects coming to its new Hallmark+ streaming service, which will replace Hallmark Movies Now in mid-September.
The new streaming service will launch with projects including unscripted shows hosted by Hallmark stars such as Lacey Chabert, Luke MacFarlane, Wes Brown, Ashley Williams, Jonathan Bennett and Melissa Peterman.
Hallmark+’s schedule also includes a holiday limited series (“Holidazed”), a film trilogy (“The Groomsmen”) and a scripted series based on a best-selling novel, “The Chicken Sisters.”
