Scientists share liver disease reversal in new trials

With the rise in cases of drug-induced liver damage (DILI), experts have warned of some commonly associated hidden dangers Medicines and supplements.

Statistics show that Dili, also known as toxic hepatitis or hepatotoxicity, is known to be a key cause of acute liver failure – has been growing in Western countries since the 1960s.

How drugs can harm the liver

A recent study in toxicology has identified several drugs that are most likely to cause liver damage.

  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen), a common over-the-counter painkiller
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that are commonly used to treat headaches, fevers and chronic inflammatory disorders
  • Aspirin, a common over-the-counter drug used as a thermogenic reducing agent, Pain medicine The blood is thin
  • Nimesulide, an NSAID used to relieve pain and reduce fever
  • Methotrexate, an anti-metabolite drug used in treatment Rheumatoid arthritislymphoma, leukemia and other cancers
  • Corticosteroids used to treat conditions that include inflammation or hyperactive immune systems
  • Isoniazid, first-line treatment for tuberculosis
  • Tetracycline, a class of antibiotics that treat multiple types Bacterial infection
  • Halothane is used as a general anesthetic during surgical procedures

Supplements linked to liver damage

Drug therapy is not just drugs that can cause drug-induced liver damage.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News Senior Medical Analystspoke with Fox News Digital about the risks of herbs and dietary supplements (HDS) that affect the liver.

“The biggest problem with herbal supplements is that the amount of active chemicals you are getting is not strictly regulated, so you don’t know exactly what you’re getting.”

“The biggest problem with herbal supplements is that you don’t know exactly what you’re getting because the amount of active chemicals you’re taking is not strictly regulated,” he said.

“And some supplements are metabolized through the liver, which increases the incidence of liver toxicity among users.”

Dili cases linked to Herbs or dietary supplements According to a 2024 survey published on JAMA Network Open, it almost tripled between 2004 and 2014.

Researchers have identified the most commonly used plant products known for potential liver toxicity:

  • Turmeric, common spices added to food
  • Green Tea
  • Ashwagandha, herbs used Stress and anxiety
  • Garcinia Cambogia, Popular Weight Loss Supplements
  • Red yeast rice. This is said to help lower cholesterol levels
  • Black Cohosh, a dietary supplement used for mitigation Menopause symptoms

It is estimated that within the last 30 days at least 15.6 million US adults have used at least one of these six plant products.

Common supplements may help you live longer, research suggests

“The most commonly involved plant products in dillin (drug-induced liver damage network) include turmeric, kratom, green tea extracts and garcinia Cambodia, which lead to potentially severe and fatal liver damage,” the study states.

Drug-induced liver damage caused by HDS can be severe or even fatal, and can lead to death or liver transplantation, researchers noted.

Siegel from Fox News also warned of the potential liver-related risks of some of these designated supplements.

“Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory agent and can be useful in small amounts, but can be toxic in large quantities,” he warned.

“Garcinia Cambogia is very popular Weight loss agenthowever, there is no real evidence that it actually works, and there is no reason to take it, especially with the new GLP-1 drugs. ”

Red yeast rice has cholesterol-lowering statin-type properties, but Siegel warned that the amount of active chemicals is not as strictly regulated as approved drugs.

“Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory agent and can be useful in small amounts, but it is toxic at high doses.”

“I think it would be useful for some patients who are reluctant to start statins and are looking for a more natural alternative, but they need to closely monitor the amount taken and the effects on the liver,” he said.

Regarding Green TeaSiegel noted that it has antioxidant properties and can help it be consumed as a drink (although it has a lot of caffeine) – “But there is absolutely no reason to take it more with the extract.

The FDA says on its website it regulates dietary supplements. Nutritionhowever, under “a different regulatory set from those that cover “traditional” foods and medicines.”

“Manufacturers and distributors of nutritional supplements and nutritional ingredients prohibit real estate or misbranded marketing products,” the agency says. “This means that these companies are responsible for assessing product safety and labeling prior to marketing, ensuring they meet all federal food, drug and cosmetic requirements as amended by DSHEA and FDA regulations.”
