Sealed with a kiss.
Contains spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6.
This week’s episode of the Game of Thrones spinoff “House of Dragons” Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma Darcy) shares a passionate kiss with another woman, her advisor, Mysalia (Sonoya Mizuno).
This is a big problem because Rhaenyra is still married and cheating on her husband, Damon (Matt Smith), who is also her uncle, and to complicate things further, Mysalia is Damon’s ex-husband.
The kissing scene also marks the first official confirmation on the show that Rhaenyra likes women as well as men.
So to sum it up, Rhaenyra kissed her uncle/husband’s ex-girlfriend. That happens all the time!
This sequence of events comes as a surprise even to those who have read the book.
“House of the Dragon” “Fire and Blood” By George R. R. Martin. Though it is never explicitly stated in the book, it is implied that Rhaenyra may also have a penchant for women, although Mysalia is not the woman she is romantically involved with (it is vaguely implied in the book that her lover is Daemon’s former wife, Rhaena, who died before marrying Rhaenyra).
Many fans of the show have seen romantic implications in Rhaenyra’s strained relationship with her former best friend and now stepmother, Alicent (Olivia Cooke).
However, it wasn’t Rhaena who saw Rhaenyra passionately kiss another woman. or Alicent. With Misaria, this is the show’s creation, a curveball.
“House of the Dragon” is set about 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” The story follows Rhaenyra, who was meant to succeed her father, King Viserys (Paddy Considine), who died in Season 1. But it’s rare for a woman to rule in Westeros, so… her half-brother, Aegon (Tom Glynn Carney); Her supporters claim she usurped the throne. he The rightful monarch.
The factions of Rhaenyra and Aegon are currently at war. And the bodies are piling up.
At the beginning of season 1, Alicent begins as Rhaenyra’s childhood friend and later becomes her stepmother. Aegon’s Being her mother, she and Rhaenyra are currently at war with each other.
Although it is never stated or depicted in House of the Dragon that Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship was romantic, many fans have interpreted it that way.
“Everything that happens in House of the Dragon is the result of a gay lesbian friendship gone wrong,” one fan said. Post to X (formerly Twitter)referring to Rhaenyra and Alicent.
“House of the Dragon makes absolutely no sense unless you view Alicent as a repressed lesbian who’s been in love with Rhaenyra since she was a teenager,” said another fan. It pointed out.
Other fans acknowledge that “House of the Dragon” doesn’t really show this.
“When I started watching House of the Dragon I was pretty confident that it was a lesbian story, but it took me a while to realise that wasn’t the text.” another fan commented.
But now the show has made it a text, or at least depicted Rhaenyra kissing a woman other than Alicent.
This is new territory and it’s unclear where the story will go from here, or how it will affect her crumbling relationship with her husband, Damon, who she needs to win the war.
“House of the Dragon” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO and Max.
