Hurricane Ian: Waves flood Key West roads as storm intensifies to Category 4
After spending most of Thursday as a tropical storm, Ian has been upgraded to a hurricane again as it hits the South Carolina coastline.
President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency for the state.
Ian is expected to land somewhere near Charleston, South Carolina around 2pm today. Parts of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina will experience life-threatening floods, storm surges, and strong winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“Ian could rise slightly before making landfall and is projected to weaken rapidly in the southeastern United States late Friday into Saturday,” the advisory said.
Meanwhile, dozens of rescue operations are underway across Florida after unprecedented flooding from one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the United States.
Thousands of people are stranded across the state as Coast Guard helicopters were seen pulling people from roofs after several feet of water rushed into neighborhoods. About 2.5 million people remain without electricity.
According to the latest estimates, damage and economic losses caused by Hurricane Ian could be as high as $120 billion.
