Police investigating the brutal murder of four University of Idaho students have sparked confusion over whether the killings were “targeted” as they accused local prosecutors of a “misunderstanding” .

Since Madison Morgen, Cary Gonsalves, Zana Karndall and Ethan Chapin were stabbed to death on November 13, investigators have claimed the attack was “targeted.”

On Wednesday, Rata County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said in an interview that “the attack was targeted at a specific person,” before saying, “It’s probably not the best word to use.”

Hours later, Moscow police said that authorities “does not currently know whether a residence or occupant was specifically targeted” and that Thompson’s comments were the result of a “misunderstanding”.

The walkback comes when the first lab results from the crime scene are back and the victim’s family gave an emotional speech all night on a college campus Wednesday night.

Gonsalves’ father Steve Gonsalves vowed to “get our justice” and revealed that his daughter died in the same bed as his best friend Morgen.
