Gold standard scientific testing has shown that existing mosquito control methods are effective not only in reducing insect populations, but also in diagnosing dengue fever in the region.

Dengue fever, also known as “breakbone” fever, is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes that can be debilitating and potentially fatal if contracted again.

In Singapore, Egyptian Aedes aegypti, The Nile mosquito, or Nile mosquito, is controlled by releasing captive-bred male mosquitoes that carry a type of bacteria called the Nile mosquito. Wolbachiafound in many insect genera.

of Wolbachia In this case, the eggs produced by mating with infected mosquitoes have been modified to be sterile, a technique known as Wolbachia-borne incompatible insect technology-sterile insect technology (IIT-SIT). According to Medical X Press.

Although IIT-SIT has been implemented in various parts of the world, no randomized controlled trials have been conducted on its effectiveness in controlling or reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases.

Faculty members from Singapore’s National Environment Agency’s Institute of Environmental Health, along with several collaborators, selected 15 densely populated areas of the city-state and randomly divided them into groups that received transplants of IIT-SIT male mosquito swarms and those that received nothing.

Scientists didn’t know which areas were seeing mosquito releases when they started using traps to capture and estimate insect populations, nor did they know when they started using national health statistics to monitor the number of dengue cases over a 20-month period.

by end of study In 2024, the number of mosquitoes recorded in traps installed in hospital wards will be Wolbachia-The number of infected men released has plummeted by 77%. Only 6% of residents tested positive for dengue fever in the study area, compared to 21% in the control area, reducing transmission by about 71%.

This research was carried out by IIT-SIT Wolbachia It is effective in controlling both dengue fever and the mosquitoes that spread it. This is invaluable as the world is going through a kind of explosive situation with dengue fever.
