According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, next year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a 48-megapixel tetraprism camera with improved photo quality and zoom capabilities.
his Our latest investor note has been published on MediumKuo said the main spec change is an upgrade from the 1/3.1-inch 12MP sensor expected to be featured on this year’s iPhone 16 Pro models to a 1/2.6-inch 48MP CIS sensor.
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max Be expected Rather than the technology being limited to the larger Pro Max, as with the iPhone 15 series, the iPhone 15 Pro will have a tetraprism telephoto lens in 2024. (The iPhone 15 Pro has a 12-megapixel telephoto camera offering 3x zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses an upgraded telephoto system that allows for 5x zoom.) That means both iPhone 16 Pro models will have at least 5x optical zoom and at least 25x digital zoom.
Kuo said it’s unclear at this time whether the upgraded tetraprism camera will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but if it is exclusive to that model, it would be available on both iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026. The upgraded tetraprism camera would require an all-new prism design and a shorter form factor to reduce the camera’s height, Kuo added.
The analyst’s report confirms claims made last year by Jeff Poo of Haitong International Securities. Said The upgraded 48MP telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be optimized for use with Apple Vision Pro. Current iPhone 15 Pro models can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on Vision Pro. When held landscape, the main and ultra-wide lenses combine to record spatial video with added depth.
Poo previously commented on both iPhone 16 Pro models. 48MP ultra-wide-angle lensThis would make the iPhone 17 Pro Max the first iPhone model with an entire rear camera system made up of 48MP lenses — by comparison, the current iPhone 15 Pro models have a 48MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens.
