Jake Paul will lose to Mike Perry on Saturday night. The highly anticipated fight with Mike Tyson.
Now, Paul says there’s “no way” he will lose to Perry in their cruiserweight bout, scheduled for eight rounds, but Tyson is clearly unsure.
“[Tyson]was worried about me taking this fight,” Paul told reporters on Wednesday. “He was like, ‘What is Jake thinking? This guy Mike Perry is a killer.’ So he was worried.”
“But Tyson, my message to you is don’t worry. I’m going to put this guy to sleep. This is Mike (Tyson)’s appetizer and you’re next.”
Paul was scheduled to face Tyson on Saturday, but Tyson withdrew. suffer from recurrent ulcers May 26. Their battle will air on Netflix. Rescheduled to November 15th At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tyson resumes training His agent, Andrew Ruff, said he returned to the boxing gym two weeks ago and is due to return to the gym later this month.
Two Netflix spokespeople did not respond to emails seeking comment on whether the match would be affected if Paul lost to Perry.
Tyson’s agent, Ruf, said there had been “certainly a lot of discussion” about a fight between Paul and Perry, but that the decision was ultimately made by Paul and his manager, Nakisa Vidarian.
“Mike is 100 percent behind this and we’re going to see how it plays out,” Ruff said. “We’re going to be watching very intently.”
Perry, 32, has only had one professional boxing bout under his belt, a fourth-round knockout loss to Kenneth McNeil in 2015.
But Perry, a former mixed martial artist, has a 5-0 record as a bare-knuckle fighter since making his debut for the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship promotion in 2021. Perry’s last three wins have come by way of knockout.
The 27-year-old Paul has a 9-1 record as a boxer with six knockouts, including first-round knockout wins in his last two bouts.
“A lot of people think it’s crazy that I’ve made this turn,” Paul said after the fight was announced June 18. “Why Mike Perry, why now, why take the risk? If I lose to Mike Perry, I could miss out on the biggest prize of my life in a fight with Mike Tyson. Mike Perry is a brutal killer, an undefeated hand-to-hand combat legend.
“He takes punches like it’s nothing. He’s fast, he’s athletic, he hits hard, he’s quick to fight. You can’t take that lightly. All of this is a risk. I’m focused on July 20. I’m focused on Mike Perry. That mindset is going to help us win.”
On Tuesday, Paul addressed a similar issue during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“It’s a big risk because Mike Perry is no joke and obviously if I lose this, the Mike Tyson fight is gone,” Paul said. “So there’s a lot at stake in this fight and it creates pressure to deal with, but I usually perform best in pressure situations so we’ll see how it goes.”
But when asked after an open workout on Wednesday how the loss to Perry would affect the Tyson fight, Paul offered a different perspective.
“That’s not going to happen,” he said. “I can’t even answer that question because it’s not possible. I know I’d win easily.”
