Largest measles outbreak in recent history reported on southwestern college campus

The situation at the private Catholic university comes amid a widespread increase in measles cases nationwide, with 2,280 confirmed cases nationwide in 2025 and more than 900 cases reported so far in 2026.

Ave Maria University announced in an online update on February 10, “Since the start of the semester, 48 students evaluated by nurses have surpassed the epidemic period and developed natural immunity.”

Several universities reported measles activity this year. Clemson University and Anderson University in south carolina Each reported a single case, which led to the isolation of larger groups of students.

The University of Florida also reported exposures in two specific classes on its Gainesville campus.

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) recently updated data showing 46 measles cases were confirmed across Collier County from January 1 to February 7, making the university the primary hub of the cluster.

According to the DOH, the infectious period for measles includes four days before and after the appearance of the rash.

“All students on campus as determined by a nurse within the four-day contagious period after the appearance of the rash will be quarantined,” the university said in its latest update.

According to the university’s health update, the “vast majority” of the campus community has been vaccinated. Schools are open as usual, including face-to-face classes and mass.
