Depending on the weather, early Tuesday mornings may be the best time to see them.
Michael Kelly, a research scientist in the University of Maryland’s Department of Astronomy, told WTOP that the comet is most visible in the sky during the morning hours. But if you’re a night owl, nights are more visible later in the week.
Kelly told me to bring binoculars or a telescope if I had one and get out of town where light pollution is minimal. Depending on the amount of clouds, this is the best chance to see a comet.
“If you get the chance, it’s really fun to see the comet with your own eyes. Hopefully we have clear skies and everyone can try it,” Kelly said.
The green comet has not approached Earth for about 50,000 years. Its orbit continues all the way to the Oort Cloud at the edge of the solar system.
“It’s fun to think about the age of these objects, the age of the Earth, the age of all parts of the solar system,” Kelly said. “We are just a part of it.”
It is currently traveling at 90,000 miles per hour, about one third of the distance from Earth to the Sun. The moon is about 100 times closer. But even so, Kelly told WTOP that comets in the Oort Cloud don’t come this close often, and this particular comet may never pass near Earth again.
“Every time these Oort Cloud comets come inside the solar system, the planets get the chance to gravitationally push or pull them. There is little sex,” Kelly said.
Even with the naked eye or binoculars, you may not be able to see the comet’s greenish hue, but amateur astronomers have captured a dazzling image of its emerald glow.
Kelly compared comets to “big cosmic snowballs” made of dust and ice. The ice becomes gas and forms a cloud of gas around the comet. This is called a coma.
“This nice green color is due to the gas around the comet,” Kelly said.
