Sex has many benefits Physical and psychological effectsIncludes reducing high blood pressure, improving the immune system, and helping you sleep better.

The physical actions of sex and orgasm release the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone. This is important for construction. Trust and ties Among the people.

But there is a dark side. People may die during or shortly after sex. Thankfully, the incidence is very low, 0.6 percent Of all cases of sudden death.

There is Many reasons Why does this happen to people? Most often it is caused by the physical burden of sexual activity, prescription drugs (eg drugs to treat erectile dysfunction), or illegal drugs such as cocaine – Or both..

The risk of sudden cardiac death increases with age.Forensics Postmortem research In Germany, 32,000 people died suddenly in 33 years, and 0.2% of cases were found to occur during sexual activity.

Sudden death occurs primarily in men (mean age 59 years), with the most frequent causes heart attackAlso known as myocardial infarction.Study of sudden cardiac death and sexual activity America, France When Korea It shows similar results.

Not only middle-aged men

But recently, researchers at the University of London at St. Georges have discovered that this phenomenon is not limited to middle-aged men.

Research, it’s Was announced in JAMA Cardiology1994-August 2020, investigated 6,847 sudden cardiac deaths referred to the Center for Cardiac Pathology in St. George.

Of these, 17 (0.2%) occurred during or within 1 hour of sexual activity. The average (mean) death age is 38 years and 35% of cases occur in females, which is higher than in previous studies.

These deaths are usually not caused by a heart attack, as seen in older men. In half of the cases (53%), the heart was structurally normal and there was a sudden abnormal cardiac rhythm called sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. SADS It was the cause of death.

Aortic dissection It was the second largest cause (12 percent). This is where the layers of the wall of the aorta from the heart that supply blood around the body tear, and the blood flows between the layers, swells, and ruptures.

The remaining cases were due to structural abnormalities such as: Cardiomyopathy From a rare group of genetic conditions known as (a disease of the heart muscle that makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body), or Channelopathy..

This is where the ion channels that move sodium and potassium in and out of myocardial cells do not work properly. Changes to sodium and potassium in the cell can change the current flowing through the heart muscle and change the way it beats.

Changes in the rhythm of the heart can lead to a lack of oxygen (Myocardial ischemia) And it can lead to a sudden cardiac arrest where the heart stops beating.

This new study suggests that sudden cardiac death in people under the age of 50 is primarily due to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome or cardiomyopathy.

Young adults diagnosed with these conditions should seek advice from a cardiologist about the risks associated with sexual activity.

However, the low mortality rate in these studies suggests that even people with pre-existing heart disease are at very low risk.
