New federal reports show that the majority of Americans get more than half of their daily calories Ultra processed foods, Burgers and sandwiches, sweet bakery products, delicious snacks, pizza and sweet drinks are one of the top sauces.
From August 2021 to August 2023, American youth “on average, consumed 61.9% of their daily calories from ultra-highly processed foods, while adults consumed 53.0% of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods.”
“It tends to contain large amounts of salt, sweeteners and unhealthy fats,” the CDC says. “Ultra-processed food consumption is at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and is associated with all-cause mortality.”

The report states, “In 2023, from August 2021 to August 2021, the average percentage of total calories consumed from ultra-highly processed foods among people aged 1 years and older was 55.0%.”
Young children burned more calories from ultra-highly processed foods than older children, the report found. Adults over the age of 60 burned more calories from these sources than younger adults. Low-income adults consumed more ultra-processed foods than higher-income people.
The consumption of ultra-processed foods also seemed slightly soaked over the past decade. Of adults, the total calories from these sources fell from about 56% in 2013-2014 to about 66% in 2017-2018 children.

“The top five sources of calories from ultra-processed foods among young people are Sandwiches (including hamburgers), It contributed to 7.6% of total calories, followed by sweet bakery products (6.3%), flavorful snacks (4.9%), pizza (4.7%) and sweet drinks (3.9%),” the report states.
“Similarly, the top five calorie sources of adult super-processed foods are sandwiches (including hamburgers), which contributed to 8.6% of total calories, followed by sweet bakery products (4.4%), sweet drinks (4.4%), tasty snacks (3.4%), bread, rolls and tortilis (3.1%).
US health officials recently said there were concerns about whether the current definition would “accurately acquire” the range of foods that could affect health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Agriculture Administration recently issued a request for information to develop a new uniform definition of ultra-processed food for products in the US food supply.
