A man died after being sucked into an MRI machine.

The incident occurred on July 16th at the Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York, according to a press release from the Nassau County Police Department on Long Island.

Officers answered a 911 call at the MRI Center around 4:30pm. Diagnostic radiation services.

Is a full body scan worth the money? Doctors share what you need to know

“On arrival, officers were informed that 61 of the men had entered an unauthorized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) room while the scan was underway,” the release said.

“The male victim had a large metallic chain around his neck, which forced him into the machine. Medical episodes. ”

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was injured the next day on July 17th.

According to the police department, the investigation is ongoing.

Nassau Open MRI says on its website that metallics should be removed prior to MRI, including hearing aids, partial plates, dentures, gemstones and hairpins.

Cancer Screening: There are 5 types and important information to know about each

On a web page detailing the benefits and risks of MRI, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states, “Strong, static magnetic fields attract magnetic objects (from small items such as keys and mobile phones to large, heavy items such as oxygen tanks and floor buffers).

“A careful screening of people and objects entering the MR environment is important to ensure that nothing enters the magnetic area that could become a projectile.”

For patients with magnetic implants, external devices, and accessories medical devices, there is a risk that MRI will cause “pulling the magnetic material” and “unnecessary movement” of the device, and the same source warns.

The FDA also notes that “adverse events” associated with MRI scans are “very rare.”

Of the millions of MRI scans in the US each year, agents receive approximately 300 reports of primarily burns and other burns.

Screening saves the most life-saving cancer types

“Other issues reported include injuries from a projectile event (the object drawn towards the MRI scanner), fingers that have been crushed and pinched by crushing a finger from the patient’s table, patient falls, and ear cries (tinnitus) (tinnitus),” the FDA said.

MRI is a machine It uses large magnets to produce “very complicated photographs” of the human body, according to Kenneth J. Perry, MD, an emergency medical doctor in Charleston, South Carolina.

This is the spinal cord, brain, or Abdomen during pregnancy.

“Unlike other imaging modalities such as x-rays and CT scans, they don’t use radiation. That is, Safe for children Like pregnant women, Perry told Fox News Digital.

Doctors say the only major problem with MRI machines is that the magnetic function is never turned off.

“This means that when you approach an MRI machine, it’s impossible for the clothing or device to be nearby with a magnetic presence without being drawn into the device,” Perry said.

“This is different from a CT scanner,This only causes radiation when acquiring imaging. ”

The best way to prevent these types of accidents is to implement a “robust MRI protocol,” advised Perry.

“Most hospitals have different zones built into the MRI process. Within each zone there is a debate about which devices or clothing are safe for MRI,” the doctor said.

In the real machinery area, the patient should have no magnetic material.

“Attaching these very important protocols will be extremely helpful in preventing major issues,” Perry said.

It’s best to discuss potential concerns related to MRI safety, such as implanted devices, with your care team in advance, doctors said.
