Measles cases surge to over triple last year with five months still to go

American Measles infection 2024 will be more than three times as long as 2023, even though there’s still nearly halfway through the year.

There have been 188 reported cases of measles in the United States this year, according to U.S. Department of Health statistics. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Updated Thursday.

This is a significant increase from last year, when just 58 cases were reported nationwide.

About 65% of cases this year are linked to outbreaks, which the CDC defines as three or more linked cases. There have been 13 outbreaks in the United States in 2024, compared with four outbreaks in 2023, which accounted for 48% of the country’s cases.

About half of this year’s cases have been in quarantine or Management of complications.

According to the CDC, 85% of cases this year are “unvaccinated or unknown,” while 10% have received one dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and 5% have received two doses.

Medical experts say the risk of contracting measles after getting the vaccine is extremely low.

Measles is a highly contagious and serious disease Airborne diseases It can lead to serious complications and even death, especially in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the illness is characterized by a fever of up to 105°F, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis followed by spots and a rash.

Despite the sharp increase in infection rates, they are still far short of 2019, when about 1,300 measles cases were reported nationwide over a 12-month period.
