Nicole Kidman made a rare comment about ex-husband Tom Cruise while reminiscing about the filming of the 1999 movie “Eyes Wide Shut.”
The Oscar-winning actress reflected on working with her then-spouse while celebrating the 25th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s film “Apollo 11.” In an interview with the Los Angeles Times It was published on Monday.
Asked if the late director had taken inspiration from their married life for the project, she replied: “I think he was digging into that.”
“I had an idea [Kubrick] “He was very aware of what he was interested in. He asked lots of questions. But he was very particular about the story he was telling,” Kidman, 57, explained.
“I remember him saying, ‘Love triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully in a love triangle,’ because one person can feel ganged up on. But he realized that and he knew how to control us.”
The “Big Little Lies” star clarified that she never felt “mobbed” because she and Cruise had very different relationships with the filmmaker.
“Being a woman also played a part, and Stanley liked women,” she says. “His relationship with Tom was different. They worked much more closely together on playing his character.”
Kidman also recalled sharing a trailer with Cruise because their budget didn’t allow for either of them to have their own trailer.
“We had a house 10 minutes away, and we lived in a trailer,” she says. “Tom and I shared the trailer because Stanley was like, ‘There’s no way we could each buy a trailer. We don’t have the money.'”
She said Cruise, 62, would often play video games like “Mine Sweeper” in his trailer between filming.
Kidman also recalled that the scene that was ultimately cut took weeks to film.
“It was a scene where Tom and I were in bed, smoking marijuana and we were laughing and giving long monologues,” she said.
“It took weeks, a lot of it rehearsals in his bedroom, and then he didn’t like what we’d done, so we started over and built it up as we went along. There was no rush. Stanley never goes over budget. What he bought was time.”
The scene was ultimately developed through numerous discussions between Kidman, Cruise and Kubrick.
“When Tom and I first started filming with Stanley, it was at his house and we never even went to the set at Pinewood. [Studios],” she said.
“Six or eight weeks went by and we were like, ‘When are we going to start filming?’ And we never did. We were comfortable with each other and we were bouncing ideas off of each other. We improvised the opening of that scene through rehearsals.”
The film, Kubrick’s final work before his death on March 7, 1999 at the age of 70, tells the story of Dr. Bill Hartford (Cruise), who becomes obsessed with the sexual fantasies of his wife, Alice (Kidman).
They investigate an underground sexual group, but Bill soon finds himself in a situation that is out of hand.
Kidman and Cruise were married nine years before the film’s release. They adopted two children, a daughter, Isabella, and a son, Connor.in 1992 and 1995, respectively.
They divorced in 2001, and Kidman went on to marry Keith Urban. She has two daughters.in 2006.
Kidman has a strained relationship with Isabella and Connor, both of whom have chosen to follow in their father’s footsteps. Becoming a Scientologist.
