Packers’ Jordan Love agrees to 4-year, $220 million extension, becomes highest-paid QB: Sources

of Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love The team agreed to a four-year, $220 million contract extension, league sources said, which includes a record $75 million signing-on bonus and a new $155 million fully guaranteed. I love the highest paid NFL quarterback.

Love’s new contract makes him Trevor Lawrence and Joe BurrowAll of them are making $55 million a year, making them the top quarterbacks on an annual basis. These figures are: Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million per year) Jared Goff ($53 million per year) Justin Herbert ($52.5 million per year) Lamar Jackson ($52 million per year).

The agreement also ends Love’s “restriction” and he will not practice until he receives his new contract. Love will report to training camp as scheduled and will participate in team activities outside of practice.

Love participated in all offseason activities despite not having a new contract, but the quarterback’s agent informed the Packers just before the start of training camp that he would not practice.

“We feel like we’re getting close,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said at the start of training camp.

Going deeper

Paying Jordan Love that much is a big risk, and the Packers are used to being familiar with quarterbacks.

Love, 25, was in the final year of his contract but had a breakout season in his first start, leading the Packers to a divisional playoff appearance, throwing for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 17 regular season games.

He is now in his second season as the Packers’ starter after four years. New York Jets Quarterback Aaron RodgersThe Packers and Love agreed to a one-year contract extension before last season that would have kept Love in Green Bay through next year. The extension was worth up to $22.5 million, with $13.5 million of that being fully guaranteed.

Why Green Bay made this trade

The Packers NFL That’s when they traded up in the first round in 2020 to draft Love, who had four years left on his contract with Rodgers. Love bided his time under Rodgers for three years, and the long wait paid off for him, Gutekunst and the franchise that continued to have faith in their new franchise quarterback.

The Packers are hoping Love can follow in the footsteps of Brett Favre and Rodgers and become a Hall of Fame quarterback for the third straight year, but Love still has a lot of work to do to get there after a breakout first year that saw him be considered the NFL’s best quarterback in the second half of the regular season.

In his first three years in the NFL, Love has started just one game, a Week 9 loss. Chiefs In 2021, Rodgers abruptly left the team after testing positive for COVID-19. The Packers struggled under relentless pressure from Kansas City, losing 13-7 and scoring just one point, but Gutekunst was impressed with Love’s ability to persevere through adversity. Having watched Love behind the scenes and in practice for three years, the Packers felt confident enough in him to hand the reins of the offense to the unproven 24-year-old.

Their decision paid off, and Green Bay appears to have struck gold again, acquiring what is arguably the most expensive player in NFL history. Matt Shneidman, Packers staff writer
