Ozempic is It’s been hailed as a miracle drug. It’s the best-known of the GLP-1 drugs, a group of medications that help regulate appetite, digestion, and blood sugar levels, and aid weight loss in people suffering from obesity and diabetes. Naturally, these drugs are in high demand. But now there’s a shortage of Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs, leading to a proliferation of clone drugs that claim to offer the same effects and the same key ingredient, semaglutide, at a lower price. These clone drugs are easily available from telehealth providers, even if buyers have to lie a little about themselves to buy them.
We’re still trying to figure out how these drugs fit into society in this brave new world of weight loss, and part of that process is the ongoing research into how GLP-1 drugs work (much of how they affect us is still unknown) and the ongoing debate over to what extent their use should be regulated and controlled.
This week on Gadget Lab, we speak with WIRED writers Kate Knibbs and Emily Mullin about how GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic work and what happens when they don’t work. We also talk about current drug shortages and how they might be solved.
