Los Angeles Dodgers right handed Dustin May He underwent surgery earlier this week to repair a torn esophagus and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season, according to an ESPN source.
The 26-year-old Maye has not pitched this season since undergoing surgery last year to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. Sources said Maye was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment within the next few weeks, but surgery to repair his esophagus will keep him out of action for the next two months.
The injury first appeared during dinner and required treatment after May went to see a doctor the next day complaining of throat and stomach pains, according to a source. Medical personnel diagnosed May with a laceration to her throat and responded swiftly, the source said. May is expected to make a full recovery.
The Dodgers hoped May could help stabilize a pitching staff plagued by injuries. The starting pitchers currently on the disabled list with May include: Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw and Emmett Sheehanrelief pitcher Brusdal Graterol, Joe Kelly and Ryan Brazierright handed Tyler Glasnow He is on the IL but is expected to return soon. Bobby Miller Last season’s standout rookie was demoted to Triple-A this week and has become a two-way star. Shohei Ohtani He hasn’t pitched this season after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery.
May is one of the most talented pitchers in baseball, throwing a fastball that can reach 100 mph and three other pitches. He flourished in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was expected to be a key part of Los Angeles’ starting rotation in 2021, but a torn elbow ligament caused him to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss most of that season and 2022.
May’s elbow pain continued into the following season, and he underwent flexor surgery in July 2023. Since making his debut in August 2019 at age 21, May has dazzled the Dodgers with his talent and effectiveness. A third-round draft pick out of Texas high school in 2016, May has posted a 12-9 record with a 3.10 ERA in 191.2 innings over five seasons. His 174 strikeouts, 57 walks and 49.9% ground-ball rate are among the best among starting pitchers in the game.
