Common ingredients in some foods and drinks are associated with an increased risk of Blood cancer.

A study by investigators at the Wilmott Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester in New York found that it promotes the growth of non-essential amino acids-leukemia cells that also occur naturally in the bone marrow, brain, heart and muscles.

Compounds can also be found in meat, fish and eggs. Energy drink Protein powder.

Hematological cancer perception: common types, signs, and treatment options

“A key point from this study is that taurine can be used by leukemia cells to promote it. Cancer progression“Jeevisha Bajaj, PhD, assistant professor in the Faculty of Biomedical Genetics and a member of Cancer’s Microenvironmental Research Program at Wilmot, told Fox News Digital.

“Developing new methods to block the ability of cancer cells to take taurine may improve outcomes in leukemia patients.”

Scientists were investigating the bone marrow with an eye to improving treatments, so they accidentally discovered it. Blood cancerAccording to a press release from the university.

“Our finding that taurine can be produced by the bone marrow microenvironment was completely unexpected and therefore surprising,” Bajaj said. “No one was showing this, so important information was added to the study of the bone marrow microenvironment.

Taurine causes cancer growth in leukemia cells by promoting a process called glycolysis that breaks down glucose and produces energy.

In particular, taurine burns certain types of cancer that come out of Blood stem cells This release states that bone marrow, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

The findings were published in Nature.

“We are very excited about these studies as we demonstrate that targeting ingestion by myeloid leukemia cells could be a new tool for the treatment of these aggressive diseases,” Bajaj said.

Patients with terminal colon cancer conserved by breakthrough treatment

“Our research suggests that the development and testing of effective drugs that may prevent leukemia cells from using taurine can lead to new things. Treatment approach For these fatal cancers. ”

The researchers said the study had several limitations.

“We find that taurine levels are higher in bone marrow of leukemia mice compared to healthy mice, but there is no evidence of taurine levels in humans with acute myeloid leukemia,” Baja noted. “This is something I’d like to study in the future.”

Looking ahead, the researchers are also planning to study how myelodysplastic syndrome can lead to acute leukemia.

Based on the findings, scientists recommend adding new taurine-rich supplements and foods to their diet before leukemia patients talk to their healthcare providers.

“Taurine is a common ingredient in energy drinks and is often offered as a supplement to alleviate it. Side effects of chemotherapyour study suggests that it may be interesting to carefully examine the benefits of supplemental taurine in leukemia patients,” the researchers concluded in their paper.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst and professor of clinical medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News, was not involved in the study but commented on the findings.

“There is concern that a powerful energy drink with too much taurine can fuel leukemia cells,” the doctor told Fox News Digital. (istock)

“A study from the University of Rochester determined that leukemia cells in the bone marrow depend on the amino acid taurine that does not produce itself,” he told Fox News Digital. “Future treatments promise to block taurine from uptake into leukemia cells.”

According to Siegel, further research is needed to determine the exact process for blocking taurine.

“This is preliminary, but it shows an important link between Diet and cancer. ”

This study was funded primarily by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Aging, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases. Do energy drinks pose risks?

Several popular energy drinks list taurine as an ingredient.

“There is concern that a powerful energy drink with too much taurine can fuel leukemia cells,” Siegel told Fox News Digital.

“But at the same time, there is no evidence of that These drinks It causes conversion of normal myeloid cells to leukemia cells. ”

According to Dr. Furman Melamed, a Board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon and sports medicine expert based in Marina del Rey, California, the body naturally produces taurine, so additional supplies, especially from energy drinks, are “often unnecessary.”
